i have a @mac.com account which is my apple ID...

...but i'm guessing that is not an email account?

i've started reading about mobileme...and it seems that this is it as far as mac related email goes - is that correct?

...and i have to pay for that.

No new mac.com email accounts can be created; MobileMe gives a me.com address, but you need to pay for it after the trial period is up. If you only want another email address, there are many places you can get one for free.

Yeah, you would have to pay for it either way. They should have still let people choose what they wanted though. That way PC people wouldn't have to have the .mac address and mac users could still promote our platform of choice. Never hurts to let them know - http://www.apple.com/feedback/

Excuse me for jumping in, but ...

How did you acquire the @mac.com account? Was it a trial that has expired? If you paid for an annual subscription, it may still be active.

    Try logging it at http://www.me.com/mail/

If the account is still active, you will be able to access it either @mac.com or @me.com
