upgrade from Platinum 5 to Logic Studio

I purchased Logic Platinum 5.0 for mac "way back in the day." (I may have later installed a downloaded update to 5-point-something, but I can't remember and hopefully it won't matter for my post.) I used Logic 5 on my G4 for some years, but that computer died a few years ago.

Now I'm getting back into it. I have a Macbook Pro on the way!

Now, I notice that there's an upgrade on the Apple site for $199. Looks like it's for the full Studio version. I'd say "sounds too good to be true", but it's only fair really given that I originally spent $699 or whatever it was way back.

My questions are this: Do I have to have the old 5 installed on my newly-arriving mac in order to then install the upgrade? (That's something I'd rather not do - could leave behind junk on the computer.) If no install of 5 is necessary, how do I show Apple that I properly own Logic Plat 5 and therefore merit the update?

Thank you!

Macbook Pro, Mac OS X (10.5.5), RFB MBP 15/2.4/2X1GB/200-5400

Logic Platinum 5 require USB Emagic XSkey in order to work on Mac!

If you have a working XSkey you can use the upgrade.
IN ANY CASE
you cannot sell XSkey Until you use Logic 8 Upgrade because it is ALWAYS required for future installations!

You don't need your old Logic installed on your machine. All you need is a valid working XSKey from Logic Platinum 5, or any of the other qualifying versions. It must be a key from the regular retail version and not the Academic version. When you install Logic 8, it will ask you to insert the XSKey, and once that's done, you're good to go. You won't need to XSKey until you need to reinstall again.

Good Luck!

Looks like Fer beat me to the punch!

What he means by this is that as long as you're using the Logic 8 upgrade, you have to keep your XSKey from your old version (you can't get rid of it or sell it), because it will be tied to the license of your new Logic 8 and be required any time your reinstall it.

I do still possess the key (can't imagine a reason it wouldn't be valid), and mine is NOT an academic version. I have receipts for it (somewhere...).

And Dick, since it looks like I'll need the key in future, I won't be selling Logic Plat 5. Sorry.

Has anyone actually done this upgrade out there, Mac only? Any issues?

Here's another question. How is Studio at reading old 5 sessions? Does it work not at all, somewhat, completely? I'm not terrifically concerned about this point, but just wondering.

Thanks again.

Thanks Zue...
yes, it is exactly what I mean

Sorry for imperfect grammar... 😉

anyway... My XSkey is always connected to my Mac because I work with Logic from... long long time ago... (Unfortunately I am not so much young 😟 )

BUT I HAVE a lot of my old repertory that require Logic 7...
I cannot sell my XSKEY!!

And I pray that Apple provide to support MY XSkey if for some catastrophic event t it die prematurely!
That's why I hope that Apple backing to the XSKey....
and also... this is one of the SERIOUS not PROFESSIONAL requirement in Logic 8 PRO (?)

(if I buy Cubase/DP/PT etc. etc. I can open previous song... if i Buy Logic PRO 8???? I'm not so sure that this kind of upgrade that cuts all Logic 4 and previous songs was a good choice for Apple)
