You purchased a jaiilbroken/hacked/unlocked iPhone. Sorry, "dude,", but that process violates Apple's EULA, voids the warranty, and means you can expect no help here on the Apple Discussions. I suggest you contact the seller of the iPhone, or consider purchasing an iPhone from T-Mobile, the official supplier in Croatia, once the iPhone becomes available there (it's not available yet, according to the relevant page on the Apple website). Good luck with your iPaperweight.

If the iPhone displays this error, it most likely needs repair. This article provides more detailed information about the error. http://support.apple.com/kb/TS1683

To get the iPhone repaired, just make a reservation to have a Genius at a local Apple retail store take a look at it or call AppleCare.

This morning I had exactly the same problem: I hooked up the phone last night for charging (via USB conection to the PC) and this morning the phone displays the apple symbol. Totally unresponsive. Not able to be resetted. Not able to communicate with iTunes. NADA.
Fact is I bought the phone 6 weeks ago from an AT&T store and so far it has worked like a charme!
Apple tech support tried all over the phone: no success.
Recommended to go to AT&T store and replace the SIM card: did that, still does not work.
I have an appointment tonight at apple store to replace the phone and I am wondering if the new phone will work.

For some reason my voicemail box which was setup and working alright says as of today: that it is not setup and so noone can even leave a message for me while I am without phone! Which makes me wonder if this is coincidentally happening or if the problem is actually an AT&T problem?

Any coments on this.

Thanks.

Ilonka

There is no reason to assume this.

That very same error happened to my Wife's phone that she got directly from the Apple Genius.

The sim worked when we got it replaced by the same Genius the next day.

The inability to read its sim is not the same as the sim being unusable in his country.

Just because it was bought on eBay and doesn't work does not mean it is jailbroken, hacked, unlocked.

There are people that are selling 3 month old phones for other reasons... usually because they want something else or the iPhone didn't suit them.

Try putting the phone in DFU Mode and doing a restore. You can find some youtube videos on how to do this. This can be used to force a new firmware on the iPhone. You can even download the *.ipsw file directly from Apple and restore from that.

Be realistic - the chance that the OP bought a legally unlocked iPhone 3G from eBay for use in a country in which the iPhone was not currently available through any Apple-negotiated carriers at the time is best expressed as a very, very small fractional number.

Even if that is the case, service is only available in the country in which the phone was originally purchased.

No one disagrees that he got taken to the cleaners by another Ebay scam artist.

I hope he follows thru and posts a bad review for the seller, and perhaps even files a complaint with Ebay.

But that doesn't mean the phone was jailbroken, or hacked.

Its highly unlikely to be unlocked (either legally or illegally).

Note to Europeans:

This phone is fundamentally not compatible with the VERY COMMON practice of swapping sims as you move from country to country to avoid horrendous roaming charges. To do this you need a cheap GSM phone that takes any over the counter traveler sim that you can buy at any train station or on the web.

You need to lobby the EU to outlaw these high roaming charges, or get another back-up phone and use the iPhone as a iPod Touch when traveling.

Even here in North America, ATT will let you roam the 50 states, but connect to a Canadian or Mexican tower and you better reach for your pocketbook.

Same thing happened to my Rogers (Canada) issued iPhone. Traveled to NYC from Vancouver with iphone 3g 16G. After one day in the city phone blocked and everytime I connected to iTunes as screen suggested, got same reply, "Itunes cannot connect to iphone because cannot access the information......." Called carrier (Rogers) from v. expensive hotel phone, and they could not figure out how the IMEI number had changed from my original one issued with phone to the mystery 00499XXXXX one. Kept asking me if someone had swapped out the phone.Tech support there said that the IMEI is a hardware ID code and cannot change. Ha! Back in Vancouver, after another lengthy call, Rogers agreed to send me a new phone which I am awaiting.......
I would really like to know exactly who blocked the phone. Apple, At&T, or Rogers because I would like to sue for general loss of time, business, and the hassle of having to deal with total unhelpfulness from all sides! I tried reloading SW with home button pressed. It actually loaded, but then got the same message from iTunes when I tried to sync it.
