Extreme problem with my internet provider

I have a airport extreme ( a square one 802.n) and have it plugged into my modum. My IP is a cable company named wowway or wideopenwest. After 8+ hours with apple support and 3+ hours with wowway and 2 visits to the apple store I am still having problems. I am problems because my ip doesn't know enough, and I dont know how to explain to wowway what the apple people want me to tell them. My internet drops and then I can't get onto the internet. The extreme doesn't recognize the ip address the cable company is trying to send out. I am so frustrated can anyone help?

macbook, Mac OS X (10.4.11)

tpask, Welcome to the discussion area!

Always make sure that you reset the cable modem whenever you switch the Ethernet connection from your computer to the AirPort Extreme base station (AEBS). Most cable modems will only talk to one device. Powering off the cable modem will cause it to forget the device it was talking to. When the cable modem is powered on it will detect the new device and start talking to it.

Some cable modems have a button on the back for this reset.

Some cable modems have a small internal battery which must be removed to cause this reset.

Sometimes the cable modems must be turned off overnight to allow equipment back at the ISP's office time to reset.

Another possibility is that your ISP (wowway) is tracking MAC addresses and you must give them the WAN MAC address of the AEBS.

Duane, thanks I have reset the modem but not everytime I go back and forth. I will try this and even try the overnight reset.

HOWEVER< I was talking to wowway yesterday and I wanted to give them my mac address and the person told me he doesn't need that. I told him that is what apple care told me and he said he could not assign it a mac address. Did I tell him the right thing?

I do not have the same problem when going directly from modem to Macbook. Will close this post out and post on your suggestion. Still think its a DNS problem

But this finding indicates you do have an AX problem, and it might very well have to do with your DNS settings. There are DNS settings accessible via the AirPort Utility. Perhaps this thread will be of assistance: http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?threadID=1775123&tstart=0
