The only Apps available for download can be found in the App Store in itunes.
Its that simple. I have tried to view pages, only for it to tell me I need to download it. I this possible/recommended?

Script is already available. It may be turned off - check Settings > Safari and make sure JavaScript is ON.
Java is not supported by the iPhone, and only Apple can change that (note that Java ≠ JavaScript - those are two very different technologies related only by coffee-derived names).

thank you both for the info. I know nothing about computers. The comparison between java and java script were helpful, but what is the difference?

JavaScript is an set of features used by most browsers for some functions like drop-down menus. Java is a platform-independent coding engine that runs within web browsers that support it, but the iPhone isn't one of those, mainly for performance reasons. Key point, if a website says Java is required, it won't run on the iPhone, period.
