No sound on .mov files - why?

Question

No sound on .mov files - why?

I've just got a MacPro running 10.4.11. If I download a .mov file it appears to play perfectly but with no sound. I have Quicktime 7.5 installed. What can I do about this?

.mov is a container that can include a wide variety of codecs. At a guess you need to download and install Perian from http://perian.org/

You should read this support page http://perian.org/#support in case you need to delete older codecs.

I've got Perian installed (it's the only item (perian.component)in users/library/quicktime) but it makes no difference

Can you check in Movie Inspector in Quicktime Player what codec the video is?

I can't see anything that says codec, but under 'Format' it says AAC, Stereo(LR),44.100kHz H.264

AAC is the audio format, which Perian can handle.

What else does it say?

It just gives Source, Format, FPS,Data Size, Data Rate etc. Nothing saying 'codec'

Sorry, my bad - you already mentioned that it is H.264, about which more here:

As you can see these should play in Quicktime 7.5.5 which you presumably have?

As for the missing audio:

Your audio settings may have been changed.

1. Open Audio MIDI Setup (/Applications/Utilities/), then check the Audio Output setting.
2. Change the Audio Output setting to 44100.0 Hz.
3. Quit Audio MIDI Setup.

OK - Audio Input is already 44100.0, Audio Output says 'Output is not supported'. Default and System Outputs are both set to'Built-in Output'

Properties for 'Built-in Line Input'
Audio Input source 'Line In'
format 44100.0Hz 2ch - 24bit
Channel M volume slider - n/a
Channel 1 volume slider - 0.35
Channel 2 volume slider - 0.35
Default and System Outputs - 'Built-in Output'
Audio Output - 'Output is not supported'

I haven't got the options shown on your screenshot - no 'built-in audio', for instance. My only alternative is 'built-in digital input'

A MacPro does not produce sound?

Granted my settings are for an iMac running Tiger, but the principle should be the same.

I can't explain it - my Mac certainly produces sound, and things like YouTube videos play normally - it's these .mov files seem to be a problem. And I've no idea why there should be no 'output audio' in the Midi settings

I'm a bit puzzled by this - in users/library/quicktime I have the Perian component. In users/library/internet plugins I have nothing.

In Macintosh HD/library/quicktime I have only AppleIntermediateCodec.component and AppleMPEG2Codec.component

In Macintosh HD/library/internet plugins there are among other plugins two QuickTime ones - Quicktime plugin.plugin and Quicktime plugin.webplugin

Should I change/remove any of these?
