Could not restore - Operation not permitted when copying Time Machine
Hi, i need to move my time machine backup to another drive. I know i can do so with Disk Utility => Restore. Problem is that everytime i try doing the restore, it give me this error: "Could not restore - Operation not permitted".
I've tried this on 2 separates HD. Same problem. I've re-formatted the drive...Same problem..
What is starnge is that it start doing the copy. I can see the folders on my destination disk. But for a reason it always stop...
It copy some data then it does not copy anything else. It still says: copying file, but nothing more happen. Every time i try, it doesn't stop on the same file by the way. I always get around 150mb of data. The external drive i'm using have 2 partition. I don't know if this may be the problem. I'm only trying to copy one partition...
I can still go in Time Machine and see my older data.
Any other idea? Do i have to loose all my data and start a new time machine backup?
I had the same problem (error message) and I only had one partition on both external drives. I selected the option "erase destination" and it now says estimated time: 4 hours. It seems to be working for me now and I will check it in the morning!
I am moving TM from a 500GB mybook to a 1TB mybook.
I'm having the same problem... I was wondering if it could be because my Mbp HD only has 80 Go available and I have to transfer 250 Go from TM HD to the new one (1 To)... Just a thought...
How did your transfer go?
Ps: I also tried to transfer the data via CCC. It lasted 5 hours to get an error message saying that there were some files missing and that cloning could not be achieved!!!!
Thanks for your help!
It's not clear from your post if you are trying to copy the entire .sparseimage as a single file - which is what you should be doing - or trying to restore it as a working system to an external drive - which is what it sounds like if you can see folders copying.
Could you clarify this and maybe we can point you in the right direction.
Get a copy of CarbonCopyCloner, and clone the whole of old drive that you're using for Time Machine onto the new one.
Ok; problem finally resolved for me. I had to name the two external drives with the very same name. I used the Disk Utility and Clicked on the "erase destination data before restoring. It took about 3 hours to have all my previous Time Machine backups (about 150 Go now since TM erased my first backup on the old drive for lack of space) copied into my new External Hard drive. I'm glad it's over and hope this will help some of you...
Good day all, it looks like I'm in the same boat here. Here's what I've done:
- Booted from the Leopard CD
- Created a copy of the entire drive (where I had OX & Vista x64 installed)
- Wiped the entire (Hitachi, I believe?) drive
- Now I'm trying to restore that image back onto the drive
The process tends to begin okay, but then, 15 minutes later, it just stops spontaneously, giving me "could not restore - operation not permitted".
I've checked both: the drive and the image for errors using default facilities (of the Leopard CD), and that hasn't changed anything.
Does anyone have anything else to say on this?
And I did this to start with in the first place, because I heard that this is a good way to speed things up, fix problems, e.t.c., after some time of use (aka drives defragmentation in Windows?)

PS My laptop is not with me now, but when I get home, I'll try renaming the external drive to the same name as the main MBP drive (from what I gathered from this thread?). I've also tried ticking the "erase destination" thing, and I got another error of some sort, don't remember now what it said...
