Can Superdrive read DVD-R DL?

Hi guys. Is the Superdrive in my machine (model number UJ-816) able to read DVD-R DL and DVD+R DL home burned discs? I suppose so, as moves are on these types of discs, right?

The reason I ask is that I bought DVD+R RW DL discs which I burned on another machine and tried in my Superdrive, but the drive could not read them. So now I want to try with discs which are not rewritable.

Double layer and dual layer is the same thing, right?

Thanks for any help!

Hi Broody, thanks a lot for your help.

However, if my drive does not support reading DL discs, how can I watch dual layer DVD movies from the drive? Or is it that my drive can read dual layer commercially pressed discs, but not a DVD-R DL that I burn on another computer? I just want to read DVD-R DL from the Superdrive, not burn them.

Regards.

Welcome to Apple Discussions!

The machine in your profile has a built-in Superdrive that is only capable of DVD-R optical disc reading and writing. Dual Layer disc reading only came about with newer burners. The DVD+R DL and DVD-R DL are different formats, and not all Superdrives support both. Initially once dual layer came about, only the DVD+R DL format was supported. Check a vendor like http://www.macsales.com/ for the most compatible optical drives.

Movie DVDs are a commercial grade DVD that is designed to be readable under any kind of DVD player. You normally can't buy those DVDs in the store. As I say +DL and -DL are different kinds of dual layer. Newer Superdrives have better refined lasers for both reading and writing consumer grade DVD DL discs.
P.S. By the way, it is Brody, not Broody. Check your keyboard repeat rate!

Ok, thanks a lot for that info. 🙂

Sorry about the double o's; just looked up broody, on top of the moody definition it means wishing to sit on eggs or have a baby, I'm so sorry!
