iPod won't sync w/ iTunes 5

My iPod will not sync with iTunes 5. I've tried uninstalling then installing iTunes 5, updating the iPod software, nothing works. I've tried this several times. I'm also not using the quick switch feature.

I continue to receive this message:

“The software required for communicating with the iPod is not installed correctly. Please reinstall iTunes to install the iPod’s software.”

I've never had a sync problem before. How can I sync my iPod with iTunes 5?

I have tried everything.
I have windows XP, downloaded iTunes 5.0 Thursday night. And now when I put the iPod in the cradle, I get this message: "The software required for communicating with the ipod is not installed correctly. Please reinstall iTunes to install the iPod's software."
I didn't have this problem before.
I have removed and reinstalled so many times, both iTunes and iPod Updater. I cleaned out all of my temp files. I have switched USB ports. Nothing. I spent 2 hours with my Dell support trying to resolve this issue.
My iPod is just sitting in the cradle with the do not disconnect circle - and has been for hours.
I also went to open the iPod Updater 2005-09-06. A clean, new downloaded version. When this opens, I get a message saying: iPod Service Error."
I'm stumped! And I stumped the poor guy from Dell that was on the phone with me for 2 hours. We tried everything. How can I go back to yesterday's version? And what do I do with my iPod? It just has the do not disconnect message! what do I do?? I have followed everyone's instructions on the above mentioned "iPod Service Error or Please reinstall iTunes" link. Please please help. I may very well throw this against the wall. Does Apple know what's going on????

I get the same exact problem with iPod and Windows XP. Tried all the suggested fixes from the Apple support site and nothing worked. Suggest you go to the following link http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=93716 and on the right hand side submit a note to apple that "It wasn't helpful.." Hopefully they will investigate and post a new fix shortly.

I have the same problem with my ipod and XP concerning this V5. My ipod is in perpetual freeze. After I loaded the 5.0 iTunes decided to "update" all the songs on my ipod. now this ipod is frozen in disk mode. I was about to make the switch to iMac this month, but i won't drop 2000 for Microsoft quality updates. this had better be fixed soon!

ditto for me casey. can't get it to work either. i've tried everything apple has suggested. i can't update my iPod software, either. what i ended up doing for now is reinstalling my original software with iTunes 4.0 and it works fine. the only problem is that any music you've purchased from apple.com cannot be authorized until you've upgraded to 5.0...which then makes the iPod/iTunes connection break again.

I don't know about all of you, but "hopefully" waiting for Apple to put out a fix is not good enough. We all have wasted so many days - and can't sync our pricey little white device (now a paper weight) with our computers. I'd like to add some music. Apple hasn't even acknowledged there's a problem??? So how long are we all supposed to wait?
