Does not recognize my admin password after upgrade to Leopard

I have a December 2007 20" Imac 7,1 duo core. It came loaded with Tiger 10.4.x.

It has been running kind slow so last week I contacted Apple and they recommended I do the 10.5 conversion upgrade to with the specific Leopard disk that came with the machine. Did an archive and install, saved settings. Looked very transparent.

Worked fine and performance improved. Both my wife and I had, and still have, administrator status. Logging in and out works fine with our passwords.

Went to do the 10.5.5 massive update and got stuck in the password entry prior to the restart request. Ended up just shutting down the machine and when I turned it back on it asked to install the new OS 10.5.5 - went fine.

If I tell it to restart or shut down it is fine, except for the following:
Anytime I do and upgrade of any software, or I try to reboot from DVD, or some other function involving new software it asks for my password (as administrator) and will not accept it, nor my wife's.

The shut down trick is not an option except for apple upgrades.

I have read all the messages but none sound right for this.

Any help is appreciated.
