Disk icon location

Question

Disk icon location

Does anyone know where the default disk icons are located? I know that one can change the icon using get info. However if one clones or otherwise erases a HD the icon reverts back to a default. I looked in core services where most of the system icons are stored but I could not find them.

G4 MDD 1.25 GHz, 1.25 GIG memory, Mac OS X (10.5.1)

I'm not sure where exactly those icons are stored. I found some inside coretypes.bundle inside Core Services. But you can change them using [Liteicon|http://www.freemacsoft.net/LiteIcon> or [Candybar|http://www.panic.com/candybar>.

There are three drive icons here:

/System/Library/Extensions/IOStorageFamily.kext/Contents/Resources/

A couple of more special ones are here:

/System/Library/Extensions/IOSCSIArchitectureModelFamily.kext/Contents/Resources /

And some are in CoreServices, plus a few very special ones scattered in other places.

I found them at:
/System/Library/Extensions/IOStorageFamily.kext/Contents/Resources/

However changing them did not change the icon t˙at was ¨sed for default!
Any ideas?

As I said making the change to the icon in IOSCSIAArchitectureModelFamily.kext seems to work fine. However out of the blue I got the following Alert:

System extension cannot be used.

The system extension “/System/Library/Extensions/IOSCSIAArchitectureModelFamily.kext was installed improperly and cannot be used.

Any ideas what the Mac OS does not like?

You might have changed the file permissions or ownership on it while editing. Or, does the OS now check for checksums or something on kext to prevent malicious code?

That's a real possiblity. I have always made a couple of changes here and there to system files and if I haven't bothered to do so in a way that preserves the correct permissions, I'll run Repair Permissions to set things right. And I know that one of these days I'm going to run into a case where where the checksum business bites me. I understand that it is now potentially the case that something is protected in that way, but I haven't run into a case yet. If that is so I haven't heard of any way around it. You'll just have to restore the original.
