Score Editor Grab / Move Notes from Treble to Non Existent / Visi Bass Clef

When I am in the score editor and I have been playing a piece.

How do I quickly grab the notes which should be assigned to the Bass Clef and move them to a Bass Clef which does not yet exist (or at least is visible) in the score editor?

You need to read the manual with regard to two things:

1 - Staff styles - choose a staff style on the LHS which has both treble and bass clef ie a piano style

2 - If you want the voices to be separate like a real piano part, you need to read the section on polyphonic voice styles. Select a different midi channel for the bass clef and then you can use the voice separator tool to drop the voices down on to the bass clef

Thank you for replying musicspirit.

First some questions that came about when i was trying to follow your directions

1. what does LHS stand for?
2. When I went from the score editor windows Layout --> Staff Styles --> pull down menu to select various staff styles. However when I select piano, I see no Apply or Ok button to implement the change. Furthermore when I make a change in the staff style from that window. I close the window reopen it and my change i.e new staff style selection is not saved or implemented.

But I think I found an easier way!

I ended up going from the Score Editor to Options Menu --> Open Score preferences --> at the bottom of the new window is a section called "Split" with a horizontal scroll bar!

I just dragged that to C4 and checked the button "Auto split notes in multi staff chord styles"

Now I have a proper base and treble cleff when I record midi data now!! ^_^

It also changed Layout --> Staff Styles --> pull down menu to select various staff styles, the default staff style to piano. I suppose this is how you get it to save a new staff style? Still confused on that part.

I am pretty content with the way it is now. But I wanted to hear your opinion on my solution.

Furthermore does your solution of splitting the midi keyboard to transmit on two midi channels one for bass one for treble offer any advantages?

Thanks again musicspirit you rock!

hello again cyline - glad my post was of use to you.. your solution of finding a split point in the Score Preferences is a good one but is only the first step for general use.

If you sometimes have the Left Hand of a piano part going above C4, or the Right Hand going below then you will have notes on the wrong stave. ( By the way LHS means simply Left Hand Side, ie of the screen where all the boxes are in the Score Editor). But for Piano Part here are a few pointers:

1. Make a blank region in the arrange page, or play something in to the Logic

2. Open Score, and select a Staff Style in the box near the top on the Left Hand Side

3. Open Staff Styles and "duplicate" a Piano Style with your own name say PNO 1

4. Now you are using a multiphonic staff style it will give you the possibility to re-assign the lower stave to a different midi channel.

5. You are now able to use the Voice Separation tool to drop or raise any notes which are in the wrong stave. Also look into the Key Command for swopping a note or selected group of notes + or - 1 channel

Here's what I normally do:

I choose the existing Piano staff style (the relevant region must be selected for this to have any effect).

Then I'll get a split at C3 (default): notes above C3 will be shown in the treble clef, lower notes will be shown in the bass clef. (The split point doesn't need to be C3, but C3 is the default).

If I later need manual control over the split point, I select "Piano 1/3" instead. In Logic, assignment to polyphonic voices is based on MIDI channels, so by choosing a polyphonic staff style, I can decide where notes shall appear by changing their MIDI channels (eg. by using the Voice Separation Tool).

If I recorded my notes using MIDI Channel 1, all the notes will jump up to the Treble clef, so I let Logic create a split for me (Functions>Note Events>Assign Channels Based on Score Split).

After this, I'm back to a split at C3, but the notes are now assigned to two different polyphonic voices. Now I can use the Voice Separation Tool where I need to.

This way you can both skip creating a new staff style and going through the whole track with the voice separation tool.

One more thing: if you don't want to deal with changing staff styles, or bother to learn about Logic's way of dealing with polyphonic voices, there's an even simpler solution (which will work in some situations):

Just select a normal Piano style for the region, and use these two key commands:

Voice/Staff Assignment: staff above voice
Voice/Staff Assignment: staff below voice

This will make Logic show notes above or below their current staff, but will give a useful result when changing staff assignment doesn't mess up how rests appear. Logic will still calculate rests based on the note's original staff assignment, not on it's staff 'below/above voice' setting.
