USB works with 9.2.2. but not with 10.3.9.

I have a dual boot G3/266 Beige Minitower. The system profiler indicates that USB ports are available in OS 10.3.9.; however, USB devices are not recognized. The USB card (ADS Dual Link 180 USB/Firewire) did recognize USB devices when I had 10.3 installed, but installing 10.3.9. put a stop to this. USB Devices work fine in 9.2.2.

I thought there was an updater available at one time that might be able to help me. I am weary of contending with a kernel panic and would like to find the least troublesome method of rectifying this problem.

Any information that can be offered would be greatly appreciated.

I have read http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?threadID=485201&tstart=132 (why I didn't find this before is a mystery) and I am checking with ADS Tech to see if my PCI card (ADS Dual Link DLX-180) is a counterfeit. It has 4 USB ports (1 internal and 3 external) and 2 external FireWire ports. My card does not look like the photo of the card on the installation manual (which does not show an internal USB port). The written description of the card on the plastic "blister" packaging is identical to the photo on the manual. Products are subject to change and this might account for the card/literature discrepancy. I will post my findings. Thanks for your time.

Hi Tom,

The following seems relevant in that it deals directly with USB issues. I can't seem to find discussion about this.
http://developer.apple.com/hardwaredrivers/download/usbdebug.html

This is the download that matches my system:
Mac OS *X 10.3.9 7W98* IOUSBFamily.kext 2.1.5 System Update v 217.4.4

My IOUSBFamily.kext extension version is 2.1.5

My System Software Overview:
System Version: *Mac OS X 10.3.9 (7W98)*
Kernel Version: Darwin 7.9.0

Readme for IOUSBFamily-217.4.4-log
Release Notes: This is the version of the IOUSBFamily that shipped with *10.3.9 (7W98)* but with logging enabled. It will overwrite all the header files associated with the IOUSBFamily. It will install the latest versions of USBProber.app and the tool usblogger. A restart is required. (USBProber.app will now install the KLog.kext, if needed, when you click on the "Start" button of the USB Logger pane.)

I am contemplating installing the 10.3.9 Combined Update; however, I prefer to deal with my USB problem directly instead of updating my entire system. Does this seem reasonable or is this a wrong-headed approach.

Thanks for any thoughts you or others might have regarding this,
Jerry

Thanks so much for your reply. I did two things: checked the System Profiler and looked at the card itself. The card appears to verify the System Profiler information. Please forgive me if I have provided too much information.

The *System Profiler provided the following data* about the card:

Hi Tom,

Thanks so much for your memo. I wanted verify the legitimacy of my PCI card before attempting other measures. I have examined the page you suggested and the my next step is to install the OS 10.3.9. Combined Update (I think I did this a couple of years ago).

I am reluctant to tinker too much since my machine has otherwise been running well for 2 years. Kernel panics scare the **** out of me and AppleJack (I bow to its inventor) pulled me out of a seemingly inescapable abyss during the last one. It generally takes me several tries with XPostFacto to install OS 10.3 from OS 9.2.2. if things go terribly wrong. It doesn't seem to take much to upset the balance of my dual boot system.

I will keep you posted.

Take care,
Jerry

According to an [ADS web page|http://www.adstech.com/Support/Downloads/Downloads.asp?product_Id=DLX180&p roductName=DUAL%20LINK%20PCI%20CARD] the drivers only support up to 10.2.8. (USB 2.0 Drivers for Mac OS 10.X
Version:3.1.2 Supported Operating System: Mac OS X (up to 10.2.8 ONLY))

Do you know what chipset is on the card? An old posting I kept from a previous discussion mentioned that OSX has support (inbuilt drivers) for NEC chipset cards.

The Combined Updates have been very well-behaved and generally not caused problems, even when they are applied multiple times. I would try that approach first.

I would not recommend installing stuff from the developer pages unless you are prepared to analyze any future problems using a debugger program.

The long term solution, if the Combined Update does not fix your problem, may be to buy a USB card with an NEC chipset (for compatibility back to OS 9) or an RTL8139 chipset (for OS X only).

USB works with 9.2.2. but not with 10.3.9.
