Regarding Windows disk formats: I believe that the NTFS format is read-only for Mac. Only the FAT/FAT32 format is read and write.

As far as your Time Capsule goes, I don't have one of those, but I do have an Airport Extreme Base Station (AEBS) and it has a USB port on the back that I attach an external hard drive to. This allows anyone on the network to access this particular hard drive. However, they can only see that hard drive on their computers when they connect to the AEBS. (You can connect to the AEBS by opening a finder window and clicking on the AEBS that you see listed all the way to the left.)

To configure this hard drive attached to the AEBS I have to start the airport utility application in my Applications/Utilities folder. Once the application starts, there is a button at the top that gives me access to any drives attached to the AEBS.

I know this is not exactly the same as a Time Capsule, but perhaps it will point you in the right direction.

I recall that Mac OS can read NTFS, but not write to it without third-party software.

When using a drive connected to the Time Capsule, it doesn't matter what Mac OS X can and can't do, as the Time Capsule handles all read and write requests sent to it, and it can't read NTFS.
