Install problems USB Adapter Card support 1.4.41 to Mac OS 8.6

I am attempting to install the Apple USB driver 1.4.1 on my PowerMac 7600/132 to be able to use a newer printer. This computer does not have internet access and is a stand alone financial computer running Quick Books Pro.

Mac OS 8.6
128 MB Ram
132 MHZ

I purchased a Keyspan USB PCI Card - UPCI-2
This is a USB 1.1 device and supports "Mac OS 8.6 (or later)
Internet connection required to install driver under Mac OS 8.6 - 9.0

Current USB Extensions
USB Device Extension 1.2 111K Apple yes Enabled Yes
USB Support 1.2 98 K Apple yes Enabled Yes

I have downloaded the USB 1.4.1 driver from the apple download center
http://download.info.apple.com/AppleSupport_Area/Apple_Software_Updates/English-North_American/Macintosh/USBUpdates/

And copied all file to a Zip disc

When I start the install it initiates and then a dialog box opens

"Please insert the disc:
USB Adapter Card Support"

Keyspan was unable to advise any solution.

Any thoughts?

Not sure why you are getting this message. Put the installer file on you desktop & then do the install.

BTW - Install the USB PCI card before you install the software.

Thanks for the suggestion...

Unfortunately it did not change the outcome. I tried both from the hard drive and the Zip drive. Same result.

The PCI card is installed

This is not a solution but a workaround. Get a copy of Tomeviewer and extract the files that way. I believe they just go into the System/extensions folder.

I did this years ago when I had a PM6500 running 8.6 & added a USB PCI card, but know I didn't have the problem you are having.

When I downloaded from the link you provided, I got this file USBCard_Support1.4.1.smi.bin. After using Stuffit Expander, I got this file +USB Card Support 1.4.1.smi+, which is the installer. I don't have a Mac running 8.6, so I can't try the install.

Suggest you do this. Put the smi.bin file in a folder on your desktop & then uncompress using Stuffit. This will yeild the .sim file. Then double click the .sim file. Did you get the message "+Please insert the disc: USB Adapter Card Support+" when you double clicked the .sim file? Or some other file?

When you downloaded the smi.bin file did you use a Mac or a PC & then put on a Zip disc? What computer did you use to uncompress to get the .sim file?

I believe that Tom is correct. The installer for the software is probably coded to be run from the disk image which is mounted when the .smi file is double-clicked, and when it can't find that disk image (which the Mac views as if it were a disk, and which would be named "USB Adapter Card Support") it balks.
