Dang!!! The interchangeability of G3/G4 iBooks ?

Hello all,

My question today concerns the interchangeability of the
IBook G3 (800 Mhz) and the iBook G4 (1.06 Mhz) models.

A. My G3-800 has a scratched screen, and a cd drive, otherwise works as well as such a computer can since 2001

B. My G4 - 1.06 Ghz logic board just died (I have another post up here called Has anyone conquered the Blue Screen of death) I took it into my trusty pro shop (NOT Apple store) and got the bad news today. (I dont have the details as of yet...)

1. anyone know where I can get a cheap logic board for the G4?

2. lol...apart from tha twhat can i remove from the G4 12 inch to replace on the G3 12 inch...

2.1 The screen from the G4 to the G3?
2.2 The dv/cd drive from the G4 to the G3?
2.3 Anything else that I missed?

A little distraught these days,
Thank you.

They are an Apple Authorized Service Provider. You can tell by plugging their Zip Code (94539) into the search box on this page:

http://www.apple.com/buy/locator/service/

I've been recommending them for a long time. Years. In all that time, only two users have complained. I believe one complained about how long it took. The other time, someone said the iBook's case was damaged. All in all, their success rate as far as the repair has been stellar (based on lack of complaints here). And that six-month warranty is double what Apple offers.

If you don't want to send it off, you could hunt a local service provider and ask if they will meet or beat DT&T's price on the repair.

Indeed Ronda!

I sent it off today, (decided to forgo the local search) I applied for a logic board replacement, I didn't bother sending the Ram, Air port card, battery, just the iBook itself, so I'll leave this thread open until I receive the iBook.

Ha! I even sent them a copy of the diagnostic (names blacked out, to be sure) from my local authorized dealer/pro-shop. Which said "not worth repairing" as a cause of the cost of doing so. They further went on to quote me a replacement board at 3 times the cost! Ha! Keeping my fingers crossed. Last post coming....

Hello Ronda,

Well, I spoke to the fine folks at DT&T services and sure enough they repaired it and the ibook should arrive any day now. I hope this is the happy ending I was looking for, to a nightmarish iBook story, ha!

Curious though,1.1 will the iBook go back to its original settings now that the logic board has been replaced? Since its not my iBook, will I have to create a new admin account and delete the old one 1.2? Will I even be able to 1.3? OR should I reinstall the OS and start anew1.4?

Any advice?

Darn! A whole month? I would've expected better!

1.1 & 1.2 Some things will change; settings will default. You will want to, at the least, create a new admin account for your own stuff. Delete the old user account if you want. When I bought the iBook G4, the seller left his stuff on the hard drive, and I just left it there until I needed the hard drive space.

1.3 Did you get the original system CDs that came with the iBook when new? If so, you can do a Restore of the system software. For instructions, you can select the link you need from this Apple Knowledge Base article:

Ouch!

Hmm, For some unknown reason, maybe I put my bag down too heavily? The iBook G4 now only powers on with the fan, at full blast...no screen...?

Is this the dreaded shim problem, ? http://coreyarnold.org/ibook/?p=20#comments

And after I had it fixed from Dt&T...shoot! I tried to boot up a couple of times now, and wil attempt to put in the shim if that helps....any suggestions Ronda.
