Since the first two iPod generations used a FireWire port located at the top end of the iPod and did not have the now standard docking connector at the bottom end, I guess the first Apple-supplied docking station would be the one for the 3rd gen iPod. I have one.

It kind of looks like the current one

except there was no remote control. And the slot (hole) for the bottom end of the iPod was the precise size of the iPod. The new ones are designed to use inserts ("dock adapters") so that various sized iPods can fit precisely. The old one does have a stereo mini-jack +line out+ port, used to connect the audio output to a stereo system.

What else do you want to know?

iPod docking stations are only for iPods, because they use the iPod dock connector, which is only on iPods.

The original iPod docking station was shaped to work with 3rd gen or 4th gen iPod. And there were two different ones; one had a larger slot for the thicker iPod models. The current docking station uses inserts to accommodate the different iPod shapes, but they all (except for the shuffle and the original two iPod types) have dock connectors. There are no adapters for other MP3 players (that I know of).
