How to Delete Mail from both Apple Mail and Earthlink Mail?

How do you delete email from both Apple Mail and Earthlink Web Mail?
In Apple Mail: Mailbox/Erase deleted messages/In All Accounts, or Erase deleted messages/Earthlink does not delete Earthlink mail. My old computers performed " Erase deleted messages in All Accounts", including both Apple Mail and Earthlink mail, for at least 10 years, but I can not remember what I did to enable this (preferences?, checked box?) or what to do in my new computers.

iMac 2.66, MacBook 2.4, Mac OS X (10.5.5)

Mail>Preferences>Accounts>Advanced>Remove Message from Server after retrieving a message>When Removed from the Inbox

You are correct: select box "'remove message from Server after retrieving message/When removed form Box". I found this in my old notes on Mail Preferences for older Macs, too. This is not working, however. Earthlink support suggested I remove cookies, rebuild mail boxes, set up a new account, etc., but I have not made any of these changes.
