TFT LCD Samsung SyncMaster 193p Display blacks off

in the past few months my Samsung LCD c. 2004 has begun to sporadically
black out/shut down on its own. the screen goes black and the small blue power light shuts off.

just this week it has gotten especially frequent. today when i was working it flashed off/black 5 or 6 times.

to get the display up again my patchwork MOA has been to do the shut-down, un-plug, re-start, re-plug, or any combo of such things.

usually it takes several versions of any combo of these actions to produce results, and i will then get a couple hours of work in before the monitor goes black again.

i connect to the G5 with the DVI adapter.

and actually right now i have hooked the LCD up to my old iBook to check out its behavior here, and it has done the same thing...blacked off.

so ummmm my question is whats the deal? is it a problem with the power cord/source? or with the LCD? and how do i fix it....

thank you.

hi - thanks for the reply. the 193P is a great monitor! great looking and very functional, i get compliments on this monitor all the time and until now i have never had problems with it. it did have a 3 year warranty as well, of course that has expired so if my black screen problems continue i will do like you have suggested and look on ebay for new power supply.

one other thing i noticed tho was that the DVI connection seems to have loosened up somehow, i mean on the DVI port on back of the monitor - when i unscrewed the DVI cord to detach, with it came the little bolt that is supposed to stay ON the monitor. so i then had to tighten by hand that little bit back on to the monitor. but that connection being kind of loose would not be causing the power light to go out and screen to go black...would it?

That DVI connection very well could be the source of your problem, but it would have to be pretty loose. If you have a VGA output on your video card, or a VGA adapter, you can connect to your 193P's VGA side. If it powers on and stays on, you have eliminated the power supply as the culprit. We can then address the DVI connector problem.

I will check out the DVI connector on our 193P and see how best to approach that problem. The other possibility is more difficult. If the inverter board which controls the backlight has gone bad, that is a bigger problem. It would be difficult to find the part, and even more difficult to find someone capable and willing to do the repair for less than what the monitor is worth. Let's hope it's the connector or the power supply.
