Does upgrading RAM void AppleCare?

Does upgrading RAM void AppleCare?

This may seem like the most basic question, but I've read through my AppleCare booklet back to front and front to back. It doesn't specifically say that AppleCare is voided by installing RAM yourself, but does say you're not protected for 'unauthorised modification' and any damage done whilst upgrading.

I'm hoping to install an additional 2GB Crucial module to run alongside my existing 1GB. I can't afford Apple's own memory and Crucial are a very good alternative. I have 2 years left on AppleCare.

Will adding RAM void my AppleCare plan?

iMac 20" 2.4Ghz duo-core (late 2007), Mac OS X (10.4.11)

No it won't void your warranty as long as you follow the procedure described by Apple.

Upgrading RAM will not void your warranty. If you do any damage to the computer while doing the upgrading, then that damage will not be covered under the warranty.

You can find Apple's DIY manual for installing RAM in your model at www.apple.com/support/manuals/ or you should find similar information the User Manual that came with the computer.

Oh thats a relief! And yes, was going to use the instructions set out in the manual, plus supervision by a more technical-minded friend 🙂 Thank you!

I've already done exactly what you're going to do. There was no problem whatsoever. It is extremely unlikely that you will damage anything; an 8-year-old could have done it. And no warrenty issues.

Be ABSOLUTELY sure you are buying the right type of RAM. Crucial's System Scanner worked for me; the RAM it told me to use was perfect.
