What is Inappropriate Language?

I received the following notice of a deleted post (one of many recently), but I'm quite mystified as to what language in the comment was inappropriate. This was in reply to another member who posted a link to a rant thread on another web site. His comment is still there, but this reply to it was deleted. Someone please point out the inappropriate language to me as I'm rather puzzled by this one.

Apple has removed your recent post on Apple Discussions, titled "Re: Photographers! Reflections on the glass display MB Pro: to strong ? ", because it contained language or comments that were inappropriate. Please see the ???Be Polite??? section of the Apple Discussions Use Agreement for a description of comments that Apple considers inappropriate:

These forums are designed to help users of Apple products address their questions and to promote civil dialogue. We hope you understand the reason for our decision to remove your post.

Please feel free to repost your comment without the inappropriate language.

Kind Regards,

Apple Discussions Staff

If you do a keyword search for macbook pro on dpreview.com you will find many rational discussions about the new MBPs as well as more general discussions regarding the matte versus glossy issue. Fortunately, most of the threads I read there were governed by the level of decorum I expect to see when professionals discuss issues amongst themselves.

Capaho,
If I may interject:

Fortunately, most of the threads I read there were governed by the level of decorum I expect to see when professionals discuss issues amongst themselves.

That may be the clincher. Referring people to another board, saying that's where "professionals" discuss matters makes "professionals" feel out of place here on Apple Discussions, and directs them to go to that other board. It may not be your intent to say that, but some may infer that from such a posting. Or they may infer that those of us on Apple Discussions are not professionals. Instead of categorizing people by discussion, leading to bias of one sort or another, it makes better sense to look for solutions that solve professional desire for non-glare screens. Professionals and non-Professionals attend Apple Discussions. Everyone should feel equally welcome to post. I would not say that you did something "bad." Still categorizing any group of people is not necessarily a good way of constructive discussion of technical issues. Try not to categorize any group of people one way or another. We are all here with varying levels of expertise, and to categorize any of us as one way or another is fairly inaccurate, thus not technically feasible. Let's aim to discover why glossy or matte is beneficial, and point people to good places to provide feedback on issues. Remember, there is always http://www.apple.com/feedback/

I may not be a moderator, but my having been on this board so long, I just thought I'd give my point of view on the matter.

You have to take that comment within the context of the thread at the time it was posted, which is impossible now because that thread is no longer as it was when I posted that. Believe me, there are a few people in the MacBook Pro forums who really don't like the new MBPs, and they are blatantly inappropriate about it far too often.

I can't understand why the whole thread has not been removed. At no point in the lengthy discussion is anyone requesting or offering technical help.

You are welcome to click on Report this post on any post you find blatantly against terms of use. Just because a post hasn't been deleted yet, doesn't mean it won't be. The moderators rely on us the users to locate the most frequent violations of the terms, though I've seen some topics delete themselves on their own too. Instead of trying to reply to those topics that are blatant, a better use of your time would be to Report this post on them.

You'd think Apple's staff would be more supportive of people who actually like their products rather than supporting those who keep the rant threads alive by attacking other users and repeatedly posting ill-mannered, exaggerated complaints and criticisms

I would love to disagree with you on this as I'm a loyal supporter of apple products, but I can't disagree, because it's happened to me. Where an obvious troll was ranting about an apple product and it was hard criticism and attacking those who supported the product. My reply was deleted because 'my sin' was to tell him to 'go away', no rudeness, but simply stated 'go away'. His/her post remained.

A brody states ....'instead of trying to reply to those topics that are blatant, a better use of your time would be to Report this post on them...

That's probably the best policy.

I certainly agree with you deggie, to say 'go away' does appear rude, in practically almost every situation.
On this occasion, It's the context of why it was said. This person appeared to be a troll and was quite blatantly upsetting people.
If this person was in your own home and saying things that upset your family, what would you say to them?
I can understand why the post was deleted as it was obviously the word 'go away' that prompted the deletion, whether the person who deleted my post, read into the situation or not.
Next time I will simply not reply and just report the post.

"If this person was in your own home and saying things that upset your family, what would you say to them?"

Probably worse things than, "Go away," but this isn't our home. If I was in a neighbors house and told someone to "go away" I'd be out of line.

"Next time I will simply not reply and just report the post."
That usually works, although the temptation is always there to hit Reply and I sometimes succumb.

Once again, I just don't get it. The link to the posting history that was removed from that comment is available from any of that member's posts, it's not private information. I posted it because it's relevant to this discussion. The ongoing sarcasm and other inappropriate replies just keep the flames burning in the MBP forums. This doesn't make sense.

Nov 18, 2008 6:41 AM in response to capaho

Capaho,
I agree it is offensive. It assumes that everyone here who is telling people that problems are not as prevalent as they make them out to be is an Apple fanatic that is blinded by brainwashing. However, your comment:

You're in the wrong place, the rant thread is here:

http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?threadID=1752541&tstart=0

is equally offensive. Terms of use say you should keep people feeling comfortable posting here. Two wrongs don't make a right. Either let it be, or report this post, but don't reply when you disagree vehemently enough for people to not want to post here.
