Uninstall and Re Install ITunes

I have to uninstall and re install Itunes.
I've haven't had to do this before, and I'm not sure what happens to my library if I do.
I have the library on an external drive (I learned after the last hard drive crash not to keep it on the c drive.)
Does uninstalling the software (or reinstalling it) wipe the library? I have 900 song on there, for Chrissake.
Anyone have an answer to this.
Or somewhere you can point me that there is an answer.

Ok, but given that things do go wrong, wouldn't it be a good idea to back it up before I do the uninstall and re install?

It would.

And that's the problem: I can't access the cd burners (one of the reasons I have to reinstall), so how do I backup to another device?

Choose Consolidate Library from the Library section of the File menu, open the Advanced section of the iTunes preferences, find the library's location, and copy that folder to another device.

Well, I tried uninstalling, then re installing.
Library is ok, but I still get this message: The registry settings used by the ITunes drivers for importing and burning CDs and DVDs are missing. This can happen as a result of installing other CD burning software. Please re install ITunes.
I've seen posted at a number of forums that this is an ITunes problem. I didn't install other cd burning software; I did uninstall one, though. Never the less, I tried using the suggestions at this link: http://support.apple.com/kb/TS2372?viewlocale=en_US.
I discovered I don't have upper or lower filters entries. If that's the problem, it doesn't seem to affect anything but ITunes.
And if it is the problem, how does one correct it?
