Time Machine/Reformat External Hard Drive

Time Machine has ceased to backup to my external HD. It provided me with a message to reformat the drive, but it now no longer even recognizes it as attached to the computer.

I want to reformat/erase that external drive so I can use it as a regular external HD, but the computer will not see it at all.

I've tried rebooting, unplugging/replugging both power supply and USB, to no avail. I know the usb is working because it has come up sporadically in Finder.

Any ideas?

Sounds like a problem either with the drive, your USB drive enclosure, the drive's power supply, the USB cable, or a combination thereof. You might start with the USB cable.
