Alphabetical Index

Hello,

how can I create an alphabetical index similar to Table of Content, but in an alphabetical order?

Thanks

Well sorting the list would not be so hard, keeping the hyperlinks connected to the list would be harder.

*Option 1* This is for a text index only. Use the TOC to output the list with the appropriate page numbers and clean it up so it is: Reference, tab, Page No. Copy this text (out of order) into a word processor which allows line sorting (e.g. AppleWorks, BBedit, iText Express), reorder alphabetically and paste back into Pages.

*Option 2* This requires Word Services to have been installed. Use the TOC to output the list with the appropriate page numbers. Select the TOC text and go:

+Menu > Pages > Services > Format > Sort Lines Ascending+

The 2nd option may or may not take the hyperlinks along for the ride. I have no way of knowing as I don't have a TOC to work on.

Claudio,

I too ran into this problem although I was trying to create an alphabetical glossary. Although I'm certain there has to be a better way to do it, the only advice I have gotten is to use other programs.

You can create a table and make it only one column. You can then edit the properties in the table editor and make the table be border-less. From there, insert your information into each cell. When you are done, select all of the text in all of the cells and in the table editor there is an option for "Rows and Columns." Choose "sort ascending" and it will alphabetize the table for you. Sort descending will do the same only in the opposite order.

Hope that helps

As the TOC is not part of the text itself, the described tip doesn't apply.

WordService doesn't 'see' the selected TOC.
It's the same behaviour than the copy feature.
We can't copy a TOC in the clipboard.

You forgot an other step.
Remove the 'living' TOC
If you put the sorted_TOC at the beginning as the original one, it will be necessary to insert a section break between it and the doc itself.
Set the section containing the doc itself so that page numbering starts with the original number.
Failing to do that wiould give new page numbers not matching those in the sorted TOC.
Of course, it would be easier to paste the sorted_TOC at the very end.

Remember than the exported-sorted-imported one is a "dead" one so, if you change something to the doc, it will not be reflected in the sorted_TOC.
