Brother printer errors after system update - Opening Raster File Failed

I have two identical imacs and a brother mfc846n printer, both imacs have been upgraded to 10.5.5, but only one wants to print. Here are the details.

Both imacs started with 10.4.x and were later upgraded to 10.5.5
One mac (we'll call this the 'problem child') was working with the mfc846n printer under 10.4.11. When upgraded to 10.5.1 it began throwing an error "LoginServer unexpectedly quit".
This error is documented on the brother site. Their solution is to install a new twain driver which fixed the loginserver error.

After upgrading problem child from 10.5.1 to 10.5.5 however, the printer fails to print.
To trouble shoot i pulled out the other imac added a printer reference in system preferences and it prints fine.

The only difference between these two computer is that the second (working mac) never had the original brother software installed, while problem child had the fax/scan etc software install from the cd that came with the printer.
With OSX10.5 brother uses the native printer drivers installed as part of the OS.

I have deleted the /library/printers/brother folder (largely to get ride of the annoying Control Center application that runs at startup (regardless to what you choose in the apps preferences).

Also to trouble shoot, i connected the printer directly (USB) to see if the problem was somehow related to how the printer is being shared .... its connected to a airport mini or what ever apple calls their small no port router.

Relevant line from the printer error log are:

I have compared files installed at /Library/Printers and /Usr/Cups between the two machines and can't see any significant differences. I have several user accounts, websites and mysql installed on this machine, so i'd really like to solve this without have to re install the OS.

I know this is a complex post, but i am hoping some can spot something in this mess that might give me some ideas.

Oh ... ya ... and i did turn on debug in cups.conf, but that didn't really seem to provide much more useful informations. the above errors were the key elements.

thanks

We are having the issue here as well. I have two macs that use this printer. One had no Brother drivers and the other did. We have a Brother MFC-7225N. I repaired permissions-
Permissions differ on "private/var/spool/cups/cache/rss", should be drwxr-xr-x , they are drwxrwxr-x .
Group differs on "private/etc/cups", should be 0, group is 26.
Still Not printing, if i have the queue open it shows the Document as stopped almost immediately.

My computer that has no drivers prints. I added the brother printer to the mac that had the drivers, but used the generic setup and it prints!!!

I am on 10.5.5 as well on both Macs
Not a solution, but at least a workaround

I was going around and around trying to get my DCP7010 Brother to print. It included the "Opening Raster File Failed" message. I did the disk utility to repair the permissions but the main breakthrough was getting the Brother printer updates from the Mac site: http://www.info.apple.com/downloadsredir.html/support/downloads/brotherprinterdr iver11.html
So after a couple of days of looking on forums and trying various files from Brother, this one worked.
