Following iTunes re-install --- Quick Time fails to initialise

I've had to re-install itunes 8 and when clicking on the desktop icon get the following message:-
"Quick Time unavailable
Quick Time failed to initialise (error -2096)
Quick Time is required to runiTunes
Please re-install iTunes"
I have tried the 'Repair' and 're-install' options to no effect. Help please.
