loaded 400 songs on 20gb but shows only 8.5gb left?!

I have loaded for the first time 400 odd songs, all short but but my ipod says i only have 8.5gb storage space left, i thought i could load 5000 songs. can somebody guide me in what to do, is my loading of my ipod not compressing the data like it should/could?

Welcome to the Discussions Ian,

My guess it is one of two things, data rate or
i use as HD.
1) check the preferences of iTunes and see what format it is set to for Import. To get the 5000 songs figure (assuming 4 minute songs encoded at 128 AAC) it needs encoded at a reduced size. I'm guessing (without doing math) that it may be set on something like AIFF (same format as a CD).
2) You have the option turned on to Use iPod as Hard Drive. Which will also cut down on you available space (but only a very slight amount) even without files on it.

Thanks for your help, i've checked the settings and mine are set to AAC128. I've gone back to basics and deleted pretty much everything i'd loaded and the ipod says i have 18.5gb capacity but only 12.36gb available ie. 6.19gb used though the itunes on my pc says the songs loaded only total 57.7mb. so my problem i think is this 6.19gb used. i've looked eveywhere on the ipod but i cannot see where this 6.19gb has been used. i have not loaded any pictures. any ideas, thanks ian

I also have a 20GB ipod with about 1300 songs currently - all MP3 format - yet it seems my ipod is about 75% full - I cannot figure out how I could possibly get 5000 songs as advertised. Any thoughts? Tx

The 5000 song advertised figure is true if all of your songs are 4 minutes long and encoded at 128 Kbps; if your songs are longer than 4 minutes or encoded at a higher bitrate, you won't get 5000 songs on it. Your iPod can take as many songs as will fit into a storage space of 18.5GB.

Does the bit rate chosen affect sound quality - I noted that all my ipod songs are 320 and thus the reason for my space issues. Can you mix bit rates that you put on the ipod. In other words could i now begin putting 128 bit songs on my Ipod that has so many 320 bit rate songs? Thanx

Well, it sounds like something is hidden on your iPod. I would turn on Manual Sync, Erase it and Restore it using the CD that came with it. Run any updates for the iPod, then put songs back on it (turn sync back on).
