phone fell in water; everything works except phone!

My phone fell into about an inch of water and I immediately retrieved it. I shook it off and wiped it dry, but didn't turn it off. Everything works except sound on games (the ringer works, and alarm sound, ringtones), but the phone speaker doesn't work. I called an employee and their phone rang and she answered, but no voice on either end. Same thing when she called me... phone rang, I answered, but no sound.

Any thoughts?

I've come to assume that we shouldn't even try a tiny, surface mount device until it's been given a chance to dry thoroughly. You may damage the device if you power up b4 it's completely dry, therefore causing irreparable damage. Even over compensate, if that's possible, the length of time you allow for drying. Many times, this will be the only chance you get.

Hey wardeo,

Let the iPhone dry out as W9FIF said.

When you adjust the volume does the iPhone say "(headphones)" even though headphones are not connected? If it does, try the tips in this article: http://support.apple.com/kb/TS1630

You can also try restoring the iPhone. http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=305744

If the iPhone has a hardware issue due to the liquid damage it would not covered under the warranty and is not repairable, though you might be able to find a 3rd-party company that will repair it.
+"An iPhone that has failed due to liquid damage or catastrophic damage where the iPhone has been disassembled into multiple pieces is not repairable or eligible for service."+ http://www.apple.com/support/iphone/service/faq/

Thanks all for the input. It was also helpful to search other discussions; some of the answers were scattered throughout. In case anyone does look at this, one last issue right after the accident. The device (phone) prompted the "airplane mode" option. I canceled each time it displayed, but the phone may have flipped to that setting due to the water/moisture issue.

All good for now!

My iphone 3g fell in the toilet one day ago (for about 3sec), it turned off and showed this sign saying the battery is off. then i did the thing that i probably shouldnt have done so tell me please if it was a huge mistake and can the consequences be fatal-i came home and charged it for 5 hours...and i heard that the worst thing u can do is connect ur phone to electricity when there is water left in it. i stopped charging it in 3-4 hours, tried to turn it on, it did. Everything worked perfectly-i could make calls, headphones worked, i could play music...then it turned off couple of times during the day but would turn on immediately again. But in the evening it turned off again and now i can not turn it on anymore. Then i was being stupid again and again connected it to computer to charge it but then i read this thing on the internet saying ur not supposed to do that and of course unplugged it immediately, put it in the bowl of rice and left under the bulb...
but my question is-how much harm have i done by charging it for these 5 hours? is it possible that it wud come back to life after that?

and for how long should i keep it in this bawl? some people say 1 overnight, some people say a week

please help me, im desperate:(
