Corrupt iPod file

I've had this happen twice now and can't figure out what's causing it, so I'm hoping someone else has suggestions. When I plug my iPod into my computer to update it, an error message pops up saying that the "PlayCount" file on the iPod is corrupted and unreadable and needs to be repaired using the "Chkdsk" utility. It does seem to actually be corrupted because it will not record new play counts or keep track of those songs I've played immediately before it has this issue. Both times I've used the "Restore" feature of the iPod updater, which does fix the problem, but this isn't exactly ideal because then I have to load everything back onto my iPod, which takes quite awhile because I have a few thousand songs. Does anyone have any idea why this keeps happening so I can (hopefully) prevent it from happening in the future? Oh, and this is a recent development, too. I've had the iPod since September and the first time this happened was at the end of December and then again earlier this week, and (as far as I know) I haven't been using it any differently. Thanks!

Graham,

Got the message in the other thread - doesn't matter - it's all related anyhow. I've replied in the other thread. I think that since Apple redesigned the iTunes for Windows thread, there have been some issues - the threading isn't working like it should.

Here it is:

Hey Lauren,

Okay - this is a completely different kettle of fish.

Officially, you can't transfer your music from your iPod onto your computer. It is a one-way affair. It's the way iTunes and iPod have been designed.

That said, there are a variety of posts out there which describe methods by which you can do this. Search Discussions for "iPod to computer" and see what comes up.

I know how to do it, but I'm choosing to stay on the official side of the law here, especially that I'm working on Apple's official forums.

Hi There,

I'm a newb at all of this -- my iPod is less than a month old, and I'm still learning to adjust and use it.

I started having the corrupted file warning today. i've read the rest of this thread and have wondered -- has this error affected anyone's ability to download from iTunes? I've never had problems downloading, but since this error has shown up, I'm getting "unknown error" messages everytime I try to download or purchase anything. I've tried rebooting, and to no avail -- I'm still not able to download my purchased songs. I get a (-50) error.

Can anyone help?

Amy

Whilst I'm sure Chris would be happy to email it to you Marcella, you might be better off visiting the location that he's posted it at:

Chris Capell, "SUMMARY: Corrupt file requests chkdsk :REPOST" #4, 12:03pm Feb 2, 2005 CDT

which would be a quicker solution to your woes.

Thank you for posting - you are the second person who has reported this on an older iPod model. Interesting...

Kind regards,

Gopha.
