Conversation skips words or syllables while talking

This is the 16 GB iPhone. I have all five bars showing, no problem there. I can make or receive a call anywhere in the DFW area. Everything else works just fine. But in the last few days whenever I'm in a conversation it's almost as if every 5th word or so is dropped or the volume becomes really low. It then returns to normal for a few words and then drops a syllable or word again. It almost can be timed as if it's a repeating pattern.

Example: Hello there. I _ calling to see if _ are availab _ to come over _ dinner this eveni _ around five o' _ or around that ti _.

I am running software version 2.1 and have reset the network on the phone. I have tried every different setting I can think of to do. Any ideas as to what is happening or has this happened to anyone else?

Thanks! All help is appreciated.

I had the same problem with poor receptions and people telling me that I kept cutting in and out, or that I sounded like I was talking underwater. Happened only after I upgraded ny 16g 2g from 1.1.4 to 2.1. Husband has a 3g on 2.1 and has no problems, so area and external factors were not the problem. I took it in to an Apple Genius. He extracted the software, which he believed was somehow corrupted, and reinstalled it. I set it up as a new phone and have not had that problem since.

Only problem I am still having is that every once in a while when I turn my phone off, when I turn it back on I get the planet & USB cord with the chilling screen that my phone will work for emergency use only. A hard reset will return it to a normally functioning phone. Anyone else out there experiencing this? (This happened even after the Apple Genius extracted & reinstalled 2.1.) Anyone know what causes this?

You are not going to believe this. With the help of a great AT&T tech, not Apple, it's solved. Not fixed yet but here's the answer. The tech asked if by chance there has been a gas well being drilled nearby. (We are on the Barnett Shale) I said no, there was one a few weeks ago but the drilling equipment has been removed. After all was said and done I decided to get in my car and take a look.

There it was, 1/2 mile away. As I got closer, my phone got worse. As I got on the other side about another half mile, my phone was perfect. As I returned to my home, so did the problem. Something about the frequency of the drilling equipment.

I called AT&T back and mentioned this to them. Even though it was another tech, he explained that they knew of the problem and when they stop drilling I'll be back to normal. Also that the drilling takes 5 to 6 days. This is the 5th day for me so hopefully I'll be back to normal soon.
