Need help with Dynex Card Reader - ASAP PLEASE!!

Hi Folks,

Wasn't sure where to post this, hopefully someone can help. I recently purchased a DYNEX card reader (I plan on transferring photos from iPhoto onto an SD card so I can insert into a digital photo frame). However, when I plug the card into any USB port on my Mac nothing happens. The package says the card is supposed to install itself. I then tried plugging the card reader into a PC and it worked so I know it's not the card.

The package says it's compatible with all Mac OS 10.1 and higher. Anyone have an idea what's going on or why the card is not automatically installing? Is the icon hiding somewhere? Please help!!

Thanks!

iMac, Mac OS X (10.4.4)

Hello,

Is this your Dynex card reader? http://www.dynexproducts.com/pc-319-2-dynex-multi-card-reader-211.aspx If so, it indicates the Mac requirements are way back to 9.0.

If the package contents say it's compatible with Mac OS 10.1 that definitely will not do the job. You are running Tiger 10.4.4

Might have better luck with a Belkin: http://catalog.belkin.com/IWCatProductPage.process?Product_Id=405356

And more information at the MacWorld site re: Mac compatible readers. http://www.macworld.com/article/55440/2007/02/cardreaders.html

Hi Carolyn,

Thanks for the response. This was the only link I can find with the card reader I purchased. http://www.bestbuy.com/site/olspage.jsp?skuId=8426303&st=dynex&lp=1&type=product &cp=1&id=1181832418044

On the box it says it's compatible with OS 10.1 and later so my 10.4 should be sufficient, correct?

It's driving me nuts because I know the card works in my PC. Maybe they mis-adververtised the product working with PCs?

Actually for the reader Carolyn linked the requirements state a minimum of OS9; it should work with any version of OSX, not just 10.1. As you've stated for the one you're using you should meet the requirements. Frankly, those card readers as just a kind of flash drive and should work with just about anything that accepts a USB drive.

One thing that wasn't clear to me was if you actually had a card in the card reader when you plugged it in - it needs something to read before it activates. Those readers are also not powered and take the power from the computer. If you have it plugged into the keyboard or an unpowered hub it may not be receiving sufficient power. Plug it directly into the computer or into a powered hub.

It's not clear which model imac you have. If it's an old one the transfers may be horribly slow if you're using USB1.

I went to that link and maybe my eyes are going but I can't see anything where it says Mac compatible but if it says 10.1 on the box than I guess it is. The ad isn't exactly forthcoming with details. Maybe Limnos can offer some more ideas ...

One thing comes to mind... run Disk Utility and Repair Disk Permissions: Testing and repairing disk permissions
If you have trouble opening applications or documents, or if your computer is running slowly, the user permissions for some of your files may be set incorrectly. Permission problems sometimes happen after you update your system or install new software. With Disk Utility, you can repair these problems.

You can verify or repair permissions only on a disk with Mac OS X installed.

In Disk Utility, select the disk in the list.
Click First Aid.
Click Verify Disk Permissions to test permissions or Repair Disk Permissions to test and repair permissions.
As it works, Disk Utility may print messages about its progress and the special permissions some files use. These messages do not mean your files' permissions were incorrect.

I am not familiar with this reader as such, but the readers I have used are basically just plugins for flash cards. As such they are just like flash drives. The card itself is probably FAT format (at least for my camera it is). Even if it was NTFS (unlikely) it would still be readable by OSX. If it was some special format it would probably react like plugging in an unformatted drive and should pop up a 'do you want to format this?' kind of message. For it to be useable in the frame one should not reformat it, so the only problem I could forsee would be if it used some strange format (unlikely if it is also to function with Windows) or was NTFS to which Tiger is incapable of writing (just reading). At the moment the thing is to get the card to at least be visible in OSX.

I purchased a Dynex memory card reader today and am having the same trouble. The directions said it should install the drivers automatically...didn't. Went to the Dynex website and downloaded the drivers and tried to follow the instructions for manually installing (from Dynex manual). I lhave the correct file AlcorCardReaderDriver.sit but when I try to open it, the computer doesn't know what application to use. Either do I. Any ideas???

Limnos, I believe has made a key point. Limnos states:
" One thing that wasn't clear to me was if you actually had a card in the card reader when you plugged it in - it needs something to read before it activates."

Mac OS displays media on the desktop not the devices. This means you need a card in the reader.

According to the download manual the driver is For Mac OS 9.
