I have a 20 gb ipod 4th gen, i have about 1,200 songs on it and have never and have no future using it as a hard drive to transfer documents, etc. My problem is, is this: I want to backup my files or move every song back into itunes beacuse ive heard of people having to restore there ipod and then they have to load all the songs back on.... except when i got a new computer i didn't know how to get all the songs moved to the new computer so now i just use the maunual feature, the old computer is in the garbage as well, is there a way to take the songs from the ipod and move them to the computer,? PLEASE HELP i really don't want to loose all my music seen as its a lot of friends/family cd's that i won't ever be able to put back on and would be a huge inconvience!

So you only have your new computer with no music on it and an iPod with all your music? If so check this: MacMuse, "Computer Crashed" #4, 11:49pm Feb 7, 2005 CDT

There's a semi-complicated way to do it yourself.
As I don't have access to a Windows machine, I make no promises about my advice being completely accurate.
1.)Open My Computer
2.) Enable viewing of hidden folders (I don't know where this option is)
3.) Connect your iPod
4.) Click on its icon to view the folders
5.) One of these folders (I cannot remember the name) will contain many sub-folders labeled "F01" "F02" etc.
6.) Drag and drop this folder onto your HD or into your iTunes library.
I'm pretty sure this will work, but I'm not certain. Good luck!

So here's how to see the hidden folders, just move Step 2 in Lyssa's instructions to after step 4 and my instructions will be sub-steps in Step 2
To enable viewing of hidden files and folders:
1.go to the folder you want to see this stuff in.
2.Go to the "Tools" menu, click on "Folder Options..."
3.Click on the "View" tab at the top of the folder options window that opens, 2nd from left.
4.you'll see "Hidden Files and Folders". Below it are two options, select the one to show the hidden files and folders.
5.Click the "OK" button to apply the change.
I apologize if anyone thinks I'm making the instructions too baby like, but I'm used to dealing with people who can't even figure out how to get the numpad to work.

alright i'll try that, will that copy EVERY song on my ipod?
If you move all of the folders it will.
I'm about to lose my songs/files unless there's an alternate solution. Itunes doesn't recognize my ipod, it says to restore it. How do I backup my files on a mac? U seem to have given wondows solution.
