Upgrade from iTunes 8.0.0.35 to 8.0.1 fails install

I upgraded to iTunes version 8.0.0.35 a while ago. Now when iTunes checks for upgrades, it wants to upgrade to 8.0.1. The download goes fine but during install I get a message that the install could not be completed. It suggests doing a manual download and running the install manually. No luck. Same message comes up.

Any ideas?
