Battery drain since upgrading to 2.2

Yesterday, I went all day (12 hours that is) without recharging. Last night I upgraded to 2.2. Today, after being off the charger for 4 hours, it is down to 20%. Anyone else seeing a decrease in battery life since going to 2.2?

My 2¢: After upgrading to 2.2, I sometimes experience significant battery drain with little to no activity on my part. I have noticed such drainage even when not using Safari. I thought it might be some other apps I recently installed, but AFAIK Apple does not permit 3rd parties' apps to run in the background.

I will start fully exiting all apps and see if that resolves my drainage issues, but it's terribly inconvenient to wait 6 sec before going to the home screen each time.

Just wanted to add my related issues:

In Sept. I bought an iphone 3g. From then until now I have had the following email accounts/services, none of which have changed:

mobile me;
gmail;
exchange activesync.

I have had no 3rd party apps installed the entire time. I use the phone approximately 1 hr/wk for voice (almost never).

Battery life was initially almost 48 hours.

A couple of weeks in I noticed the phone was noticeably warmer than usual and battery life was draining VERY fast. Battery drained 80% in 3 hours.

Reboot of phone did not fix it. Reset settings did not fix it. Delete settings and all content fixed the problem for about 2 weeks, whereupon same symptoms emerged.

This cycle continued a couple of times.

Upgraded to 2.2 firmware.

Symptoms soon came back again.

I went to the local Apple store, where they wiped the phone themselves. Phone worked ok for about 2 weeks and once again fell into this mode.

Went back to Apple store and they replaced the phone.

Phone worked for 72 hours. It has twice since entered this warm/battery killing mode and is in it again as we speak.

Out of an abundance of caution, when I got the replacement phone I did not restore the settings from my prior phone but rather configured the phone by hand.

Battery life is now at max of approx. 4.5 hours and it runs hot.

When the phone is in this mode I get frequent "could not contact server" error messages.

I tried switching to manual, but that doesn't seem to be helping (although I'm not 100% sure yet. Will follow up with final result). Safari is not running.

I have spoken with our IT people and nothing has changed with our exchange server. Also, other people at work who have iPhones are not having this problem. (It's possible some are but the 3 people I spoke with who sit near me are not seeing the issue.)

It would be great if this got fixed, because right now I have a device with 4.5 hours of battery life that gives error messages instead of checking email, which isn't the most useful tool.

Since upgrading to 2.2 I noticed a dramatic drop in battery life. I checked out my email accounts and it turned out one of them had push enabled, I turned that off, hard quit safari after each use, did minimal surfing, mostly phone calls and text, 3g is off.

BUT, if I start using email or web it drains very fast and I'm lucky to get a day out of it.

Number 1 sticks every now and then when texting

Apple's own web site is mega slow on the iPhone too!

you'd think that apple would extensively test all updates wouldn't you.

if it is the case (and looks to be) that closing down the web feature works then this is a very bad/annoying oversight by apple.

for me, if i was apple the battery life issue would be number one on my list of things to nail first time.

its a complete joke, that we have this awesome piece of kit in our hands with amazing features, and we are being held back by the battery. id of gladly had a thicker iphone if it had meant that the battery would not have been an issue.

please sort this out.

I have the same issues as most of you here. Here are some of my observations...

1. I have a first gen 16GB iPhone
2. I use a MobileMe account and a MS Exchange account. Both were set to PUSH in ver. 2.1 with no problems. With ver 2.2 I get about four hours of stand by battery life...
3. I read this whole post and tried the two main points of exiting Safari with the Home button and I also deleted, rebooted, and re-entered my MS Exchange account.
4. What I have noticed in the 2.2 update is that on my Exchange account email it pings the email server every three seconds... constantly.
5. My MobileMe account does not ping the server like the Exchange account.
6. I disabled PUSH and the battery seems okay but I really want the PUSH to be on. So, I see this as a physical problem that Apple needs to address.
7. My wife has a first gen 8GB iPhone without the 2.2 update and it is fine... battery lasts a couple of days with PUSH set to ON for a MobileMe account and a two POP accounts set to FETCH. I will not be syncing her phone anytime soon.
8. And, lastly, I did a complete restore of my phone and that did nothing to help.

So, I attribute this to the PUSH setting relating to the MS Exchange email account under ver 2.2 Does anyone agree with this?

Thanks,
Scott

I too find that battery life has changed with 2.2.

I think it is tied to location services. Before 2.2, I would leave Location Services set to ON. I found it handy to have it on whenever I used Maps or Yelp.

After 2.2, if I set Location Services to OFF I get the same battery performance as I had pre-2.2 (with Location Services set to ON). Otherwise, if I have used a program that uses Location Services, such as Maps or Yelp, it appears that the program continues to churn and use up the battery, even if the phone is not is use.

I also notice that Yelp frequently fails to calculate my current location (once I turn Location Services ON and despite the recent Yelp upgrade).

Hi,kozb

Let's go to charging your iPhone with the standard electricity plug in.
Do not use the USB plug in charger through the computer, then usage will be improved.
Such as my one today, after full charge over night, standby from the morning until now 7 hours + iPod usage 5 hours 17 mins, + 3G Enable + WiFi On + Email Hourly Pushing + 25 mins phone call, and still have 90% battery life.
Hopefully that can help you !

I used to have this issue and going through this thread I was able to fix it. Its been almost 3 weeks now and my phone DID NOT revert back to the warm battery killing mode. This is what I did:
1. I deleted all my email accounts (I had gmail and exchange).
2. I then added the accounts back.
3. I also hard closed my Safari session (hold on to the home button until safari closes out).
4. I restarted my Iphone (not sure if its necessary).
5. I now have more than 14hours if battery life and yes i am using location services, gmail set to manual and my exchange set to push.
Hopefully this helps someone here. Again all the information is available in this thread and that is how i was able to fix my Iphone.
Good luck!

Me TOO! 🙂

I have a 1st gen IPhone and since 2.2 I get as little as 4 hours of standby. The battery can appear fully charged at lunch and be dead in the afternoon with no use. When the battery dies, it really dies; the usage stats actually get reset. I've turned everything off (Fetch, etc.) and tried the Safari close trick. I thought I had this solved a couple of times as it got 'better' but nowhere near 2.1. I went to 2.2.1 recently but it does not seemed to have helped. A couple of other things I've noticed with 2.2 is that the battery may jump to nearly fully charged after being plugged in for a short time. I also get this weird message about the Iphone not being compatible with 'this' device and to try switching to Aircraft mode. I also can't turn the phone off anymore, it just reboots after about 10 seconds and comes back up.

I kept the Wifi off today and battery seems to be still going. I wonder if the firmware is trying to 'talk' to more devices and draining the battery. ie. wireless keyboards, wireless headsets, etc. I have yet to try a restore and email account purge. The phone is pretty much unusable the way it is now, so I may jump to a new provider to get a phone with a user replaceable battery and better support.

It sounds like your iPhone may have a hardware issue.

Try the general tips in this article: http://support.apple.com/kb/TS1505
Also, try restoring the iPhone as described here: http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1414

If the issue persists after trying the tips in the article and restoring the iPhone, it will need hardware repair.
