But strangely enough, phone calls work just fine.

Maybe this is a new AI feature and the phone decided how you should be spending your time 😉.

It does seem odd that this problem would be limited to the OC area if it is due to a firmware bug. Did you hard reset the phone and the problem continued? If so, consider restoring as a new iPhone.

Don't bother with a restore. I decided to restore from backup, something I really didn't want to do, but I was desperate. After 3 hours of this, nothing changed at all. I am very disappointed in Apple at this point. They really need to do a better job with their testing. I don't want to be sitting here with a phone that I am paying for 3G data speeds that doesn't work at all until firmware 2.3 comes out!!

By the way, it is this way all over OC. I drove to my workplace, and over to Newport Beach and other various areas, and it was the same everywhere. No 3G data, but phone calls work fine.

Hmmm, interesting. Like I said, my friend's 3G works fine on 2.1, side by side. We tested over and over. No problems with theirs.

That doesn't mean that your problem is the firmware. If it was, there would be large numbers of users all over the world with this problem. I just tested my phone's 3G data throughput - 2216 Kbps download, 69 Kbps upload.

Same issue with brand new iPhone 3G in Los Angeles. But worse, the 3G signal would drop within minutes, but not come back - just left with No Service at ALL.

This problem was with 3G phone out of the box with software 2.1. Apple support had me first reset network settings, didn't help. Then had me upgrade software from 2.1 to 2.2. Due to time to perform, didn't stay on phone with them, but was told that if signal still dropped they would replace phone. Still had signal drop after software update.

Called Apple again, this time I was told that they were aware that AT&T were having GLOBAL 3G network problems. I was told to try to turn off 3G, which resulted in strong signal (Edge network) and no signal drop all day. End of day I tried to switch on 3G and phone went to No Service again. Would not reconnect (and I mean, zero signal for calls, or anything,)until I turned off 3G AND reset network settings again - not enough to just turn off 3G to get service back, had to reset Network settings or power cycle the phone.

I'm told that it's "illegal" for AT&T to admit to a problem until they fix it, which I do not comprehend, but we are all scampering around, in many cases getting replacement hardware (what a waste of $ and time for both consumers and Apple,) and no one can really say WHY this is happening. How can I, with a brand new phone, know if it really is a problem with the phone, or the Network, especially if Apple techs say that they will replace the phone since it's showing no signal?

I have exactly the same issues with my 3G reception as do many of my colleagues at work with their iPhone 3Gs. The 3G signal bars show all bars indicating a strong signal, but the network speed is at a crawl...250ms to 335ms latency, and 85kBit/s(!!!) to 530kBits/s download speeds! Upload speed tests can't even complete. I called both Apple and AT&T, and neither knew of any problems with the network or with the firmware update! The AT&T rep did guess and said that it could be an incompatibility with the new firmware...DUH! He said that IF enough complaints are filed, then they'll have their technicians check for network problems!! The Apple rep said to consider just using the EDGE network for slightly FASTER downloads than what I'm getting!!! This is ridiculous, APPLE and/or AT&T! PLEASE GET TOGETHER AND FIX THIS PROBLEM!

I again just tried to turn on 3G on this brand new phone and within 30 seconds, the signal went from full bars on Edge, to 1-2 bars with 3G and then within a minute or two, to NO SERVICE - nothing, at all. No ability to make calls either. After 10 minutes, it still has no service. It doesn't seem to have ability to 'know' that it needs to try something else.

Does this mean the phone itself is broken and should be replaced (as Apple has offered,) or is this an issue of the software/firmware? If I switch 3G off, and power cycle the phone, I will stay connected with Edge network all day, but why buy an iphone 3G only to be forced to turn off 3G to do something as basic as make a phone call (it is supposed to be a phone as well, isn't it? At the very bloody least?)

I too have the same problem. What once'd worked flawlessly is now broken in 2.2.

I think it is now apparent after reading all over the boards that we have a problem with 2.2 killing the 3G data. I have called AT&T 3 times to which they have push updates to me and to my disappointment of course no data on 3G.

Switching to EDGE gets me faster downloads and also at least completes in Speedtest app. 3G get to about 25% testing and just dies. Same as in Safari, Speedtest will produce a No Connection Error.

I really doubt this has anything to do with AT&T but instead its the fault of the update. Anyone know where I can officially get the 2.1 version so I can revert or unless there is a fix to the bugs in 2.2 that I don't know off

Horrible 3G service for me in north OC, sporratic in south LA county. It seems that Uploads are next to impossible (timing out), and Downloads are about 1/3rd of the speed I was getting.

3G was pretty good up until two weeks ago. However, last weekend, I finally called AT&T about having zero data service on 3G (fine on EDGE) on both our iPhone 3Gs.

The rep @ AT&T told me that they having problems with 3G data in Fullerton since Oct. 19th and has been working on it since. Phone calls have been "ok" but not great.

However, on the plus side, EDGE has been pretty good. I only wish the 3G was working as well.
