iPhone ATT Data Package

I want to give my original iPhone 8g to my wife. She doesn't want or need the unlimited internet package. Can she activate the phone without the internet package?

When activating the iPhone with AT&T for your wife's line/number via the iTunes activation process, you must select the unlimited data plan which includes a 200 SMS allowance with the first generation iPhone.

Afterwards, you can contact AT&T about canceling the data plan and if allowed, you must also request that data/internet access be disabled for your wife's line/number. If you don't do the latter, this won't prevent accessing the internet via AT&T's cellular network and your wife will be charged by the KB for all data downloaded and uploaded when doing so. This will also disable the iPhone's visual voicemail feature. All visual voicemail messages are downloaded to the iPhone via AT&T's cellular network only.

You don't HAVE to select the unlimited data plan. You can select the lesser one, but you could incur overages if you aren't careful.

Please let us know how one selects a lesser/non-unlimited data plan for a first generation iPhone when activating an iPhone with AT&T via the iTunes activation process, which is the ONLY way one can activate a first generation iPhone with AT&T.

it is actually under apple and at&t's terms of service for the iPhone 2/3G that you have to have the unlimited data package (20, 30,or 40 for the origional and at least the 30 for the 3G) on the line the iPhone is on. if you dont have the package on at&t is given the right to terminate your service. Text messaging isnt required for the 3G, just the data, and the 2G iPhone has to have the minimum of 200 txt package (the $20 one).

Copied from your original post in this thread.

You don't HAVE to select the unlimited data plan.

When activating an iPhone with AT&T via the iTunes activation process, you do HAVE to select the unlimited data plan for the iPhone. There IS NO way around this when activating an iPhone with AT&T via the iTunes activation process, which is the ONLY way to activate an iPhone with AT&T.
