Original iPhone Came Back to Life After Water Damage!!

Here's a great story.....so far.

I fell asleep in the tub while listening to the iPod feature on my iPhone which was on the side of the tub. The iPhone slipped into the water. I grabbed it and jumped out of the tub, took all the coverings off the iPhone and used the hairdryer on it for a while. No response! I waited a few hours and plugged into iTunes and the "restore to iTunes logo" came up, but when I tried to sync and restore it, no luck. I went to the Apple Store and they confirmed the water damage and sold me a new 3g iPhone. They said to use the original iPhone as a "Paper Weight".

Next day I decided to try one more time and when I plugged the sync cable into the original iPhone it started the restore process! It even downloaded the new 2.2 software. I was amazed; after the iPhone was fully restored I tried all of the functions and they worked (except for the camera which when the shutter opened nothing appeared other than blackness). I called the Apple Store and they were amazed! They told me I was really lucky and that I had 30 days to bring the 3g back for a refund.

Shortly after, I ran into a guy who was an electronics whiz who told me to take the water-compromised phone and put it in a bag of uncooked rice. The rice would absorb any remaining dampness. He said all the electronics guys knew about this trick.

I'm going to wait a few days and if the old phone continues to work ok, even w/o the camera function, I'm returning the 3g for a refund!

Rice will USUALLY work. Although, if you still have dampness or water at all and plug it in to a power source or even try to turn it on with battery power, you will severely risk shorting the phone out. Your best bet if something like that were to happen again is to leave all power sources OFF. Then cover it in rice for a few days. The longer the better, its better to be safe than sorry. You sound like one of the very few lucky ones.

Kept in rice for 3-days. Turned it on and EVERY function was back. Slight moisture showing on screen pre-rice bath was gone. Camera didn't function pre-rice bath...and THAT came back. Took the 3g (they sold me a few days ago) back to the Apple Store and restored my Original iPhone with ATT. Apple Store folks told me I was a very lucky guy. Only problem is they told me my AppleCare Policy on the 3g (5-days old) is worthless because I opened the box. $69 bucks down the drain.

I am thinking the iPhone is the only cell phone that I know of that has survived a dip and still worked. My Brother-in-Law had his take a dip with him this past summer in the lake... it took a couple of days... but it came back to life. He still uses that phone today. A couple of years ago my buddy dropped his Moto Razor in the sink... he said it couldn't have been in there a matter of seconds... totally dead!

Now the rice ideal is fantastic... I will have to remember that. Glad you got yours back!!!
