I'm not sure how important this is since it will sync my older 4g iPod, but when I open Preferences in iTunes, only my new iPod Touch shows up under "Devices". Is my older gen. iPod not considered a device or does it just not matter?
My iPod Touch shows up in there all the time including when there is nothing in the sync, the 4g doesn't show up in there even when it is the device being synced... Crazy.
The exact same thing has happened to me. I have Mac laptop, purchased my Shuffle first and it always showed up as a device in iTunes. I purchased an iPhone last year, and now my Shuffle does not appear when I plug it in via the USB cord. So at this point I can't update/change any songs on my Shuffle - although I believe it is charging when it's plugged into the computer. Any suggestions?
I'm not certain this will apply to an iPod but I doubt it will hurt to try: Using Apple TV as an EXAMPLE.

If your Apple TV doesn't appear in iTunes
If your Apple TV doesn't appear in the iTunes window (below Devices), note the following:
◼
Make sure your Apple TV is turned on and connected to your network. To check your network settings on your Apple TV, choose Settings > General > Network.
◼
Choose iTunes > Preferences, click Apple TV, and make sure “Look for Apple TVs” is selected.
◼
If the Firewall service is turned on (in the Sharing pane of System Preferences), make sure “iTunes Music Sharing” is selected.
Thank all, for the suggestions, none of them worked though. I guess it really doesn't matter since I can still sync my 4g iPod, I was just curious why it didn't show up and my Touch does. I mean, it clearly recognizes it as an iPod and I have two different libraries to maintain them both, so I guess it's just a quirk. Maybe the older ones don't show up. I wonder if anyone else still running a "dinosaur" like my old black and white, small screen, 4g iPod has it appear in "devices".
