What's a "REPAIR NEEDED" error message and what to do?

Abruptly, my new iPhone began, and continues to flash, a REPAIR NEEDED message on the screen.

I can only access an SOS.

AT&T stores can't fix it (just sell them).

HELP!

Take it to an Apple store for exchange, or call 800-myiphon to arrange a mail exchange. If you go to a store make a Genius Bar reservation ahead of time at http://www.apple.com/retail.

Call U.S. iPhone technical support: 1-800-MY-IPHONE (1-800-694-7466). They can arrange shipment for repair/replacement or help you schedule an appointment at an Apple Store.
