How to check if stolen

Recently my co-worker offered me 'his' iphone.
The problem is, I am not sure if it really is his iphone. I never saw him with it before, but he buys and sells iphone as a hobby all the time, so he could have gotten it from someone else legally.
How can I check if the iphone was reported stolen, yes or no.

Also, is it possible to unlock the iphone in a legal way. If I contact Apple, pay them a required fee, can I get an unlocked iphone? (I prefer my current carrier because they have better UMTS)

Iphone 3G, Mac Book Pro, Mac OS X (10.5.5)

Contact your local police department and see if it has been reported stolen. You can also contact ATT (if in the US) and see if it is stolen. I'd also ask the guy why he is giving you his phone. That seems rather odd especially if you've never seen him with an iPhone.

Apple does not provide unlock codes. This is done at the discretion of the authorized iPhone cell phone carrier.
