Apple TV Won't Stream or Sync Video Content

I've had my 120 gb ATV for a year and a few months, and have recently (as of last week) encounted a major problem. After working flawlessly for months, starting sometime last week, I can no longer stream video content from my MacPro to my Apple TV. Furhermore, I can't seem to get any video content to sync to the unit either.

I should clarify - video content that is in my iTunes library appears on the ATV, and will sync and stream EVENTUALLY. It's how long it takes that is the problem.

It took nearly four hours to stream a 45 minute episode of The West Wing, which I purchased from the iTunes Store. That is, I had to wait four hours for enough content to make it from my MacPro to the ATV for the program to start. Syncing is even worse - I set it to sync only one season's worth of episode, which would be the only content kept on the ATV (so there is plenty of space on the unit), and after 24 hours, it synced only 2 episodes.

The network isn't an issue. The content is kept on a Drobo, and streamed via an Apple Airport Extreme, Gigabit Ethernet, Draft-N router. Signal strenth is at the highest level. While there are other networks nearby, at the time that I was trying to use the ATV, they were inactive (I checked, using KISMac). I don't have any trouble playing trailers, YouTube videos or streaming music or syncing photos. The trouble is strictly confined to streaming and syncing video content.

I've performed the following troubleshooting efforts:

1 - Rebooted AppleTV
2 - Dropped and readded iTunes library
3 - Reset network connection in ATV
4 - Changed channels on the Airport Extreme
5 - Changed connection to a shared library.
6 - Reset ATV to factory settings and re-updated firmware

In all cases, so long as the ATV is active in iTunes on the MacPro, it sees all of my video content in that library. But it won't play. This is not a case where the ATV won't play content purchased from the iTunes Store - it happens with unprotected content that played just fine earlier in the week.

My MacPro is running the latest version of OS X, and I just updated iTunes in the hope that the new version would fix the problem.

The only thing I haven't done is purchase content directly from the iTunes Store via the ATV, but that won't fix the problem of the content that I want to stream.

Any idea of what I can try next?

I understand exactly what you mean. Since the last update of apple tv, my movies takes forever to stream. I am so upset over this that I started to use my DVD player again and completely stopped using the ATV. I noticed that my syncing is taking forever as well. I don't think this is a network problem and more so with the apple tv. Maybe they added some form of DRM or check or something that is validating the files and making it take forever in order to sync. That is just my guess but 2 was way faster then any release that they have done after that. I will keep looking into this further and if I find something I will let you know

Thanks for the suggestion - but I'm not sure that's what's going on, since it has the same problems with iTunes Store content and content that I've ripped from my DVD library.

I realized that the problems started when I downloaded the recent batch of application updates, which may have included something non-compatible. I have a backup of my boot drive that predates the problem, so I am going to reboot to that to see if I can narrow down the issue. I'll let you know.

I found a way that works for me: copy movies from iTunes to desktop (drag them there). Then delete the movie from iTunes. Then go to the movie file on the desktop and open in iTunes 8.02. This copies them back into iTunes (and plays them on iTunes). Stop the playing on iTunes and go to AppleTV: it now works there! -> at least for me. I don't pretend to be an expert. Apparently copying them back updates the format in some way.

I am having the same problem since upgrading to ATV 2.3 and iTunes 8.0.2.20 for a PC. Since people are having this issue with Mac iTunes, my guess is that it is ATV 2.x that's the problem. Everything stopped syncing as far as I could tell. Apple Support was totally unhelpful. Wanted me to pay for extended care even since I bought my ATV last year. Told me it was "buyer beware" with respect to updates, and that my only recourse was to role back to the factory default (version 1.1) - that is unless I wanted to pay for support. So I asked her if she'd heard of the problem, and she said no. Excuse me? What would I be paying for then? Why can't this company support the piece of junk software they just released??? They are shooting themselves in the foot because now that I've rolled back to 1.1, I can't buy the new content they're pushing from the iTunes store. I've never been this put off by a company and the false advertising that "it just works."

Is there a way to upgrade from 1.1 to something short of 2.3 so I can get back to the product I loved?

Please add one more to the list. In my case, the problem is streaming. I have not tried sync as I stream from other libraries. What is really aggravating here is that my ATV has worked flawlessly with two separate Dells for over 6 months. It was the ATV interface that reminded me of how nice the apple interface was and decided to buy a new MacBook Pro for my wife.

Some more details: both my MBPro and ATV have the most recent upgrades. ATV recognizes and adds the MBPro library but would give me a "There are not [TV Shows, Movies] in this library" message when in fact there are just-downloaded tv shows or movies in iTunes. Still, ATV would recognize and stream from the Dells' libraries.

One particularly irritating element is that the Help instructions do not match the available menus and panels of my Mac OS X. For instance, there is no "firewall" tab in my sharing pane nor is there a "iTunes Music Sharing" option available.

I have tried both airport and ethernet connections and nothing.

Geez... I just remember what I promised my Apple Macintosh LC II would be my last Mac.

It is incredible that my PCs work perfectly with ATV while an apple product won't. I am now moving all downloaded content to my very reliable Dells and will stream from there. I will turn the MBpro over to my wife and stick to old good windows.
