Unknown error 13008 after installing iTunes 8.0.2

Just today I installed the newest iTunes. The programme does not open and I receive the error message 13008.

Nothing special on our Max, just that my wife and I share the same library which is saved under _+user/for alls users/music/iTunes+_ instead of the usual myusername/music/iTunes. This never caused any trouble in the past.

Any help much appreciated!

Cheers,
Sven

I got error code 13014 after I installed 8.0.2. Of course, I've never seen it at the earlier versions. My Genius Play List was tunred off -cause I tried to sync my iPod before I turned on Genius Play list- and I could never turn it on again.

I installed iTunes Ver.8.0.2 directly on my new hard drive, so I just plugged it out and tried to sync my iPod to my old hard drive having Ver.8.0.1 and the error message never poped up at that time.

It seems 8.0.2 has some serious issues.

This suggestion did not work for me. So I quit iTunes and moved the following files to a temporary folder (so that I could restore them if needed):
iTunes Library Extras.itdb
iTunes Library Genius.itdb
iTunes Library Genius.itdb-journal

Opening iTunes after this seems to work. iTunes Genius is busily gathering information from my library now. Will monitor and post updates once Genius has done it's job.

Just in case anyone else is having the same problem, I was able to get my iTunes to load again by backing up only the:
- iTunes Library Genius.itdb
- iTunes Library Genius.itdb-journal
files to a safe location and deleting them from my iTunes folder. Odd thing is that I wasn't even using Genius, but I had it on briefly at one point. Hope this helps someone...

I fixed the problem on my iMac using the hints above. Turns out, it's a file permissions issue.

Like you, I have a Shared location for the iTunes library files. And I have multiple accounts on the iMac that use the same Shared iTunes files. My daughter's account was apparently the first to enable/use the Genius feature, and the file permissions enabled only her to read/write to the "iTunes Extras" files.

Here's what I did:
1. Open Terminal.
2. cd ~/Music/iTunes
3. ls -la
4. Observe that several of the files have permission -rw-r--r--, including "iTunes Library Extras.itdb", and "iTunes Library Genius.itdb".
5. sudo chmod 666 "iTunes Library Extras.itdb" # and enter my password.
6. sudo chmod 666 "iTunes Library Genius.itdb"

Voila!

I have pretty much the same setup and had the same problem. My wife could not start iTunes (with this error) after upgrading to 8.0.2. I fixed the problem this way :
1. I logged in to my account. The iTunes library was originally created under my account (I think) - I certainly have the genius .itdb files in my ~/Music/iTunes and she doesn't.
2. Started iTunes (accepted the license), it started OK.
3. Imported a new CD (which was why we were starting iTunes in the first place).
4. Quit iTunes and logged out.

My wife was then able to start iTunes. I'm not sure if step 3 was necessary or not (perhaps modifying the library in someway helped fix the permissions though).

Hello everyone,
I had the same problem. its actually quite easy to solve:

1. go to your iTunes folder
2. open Information of every file in that folder (press ctrl + left mouse click on the file, choose information)
3. go to the bottom of the pop-up window and add in sharing & permission your user name and select reading & writing.
You actually have to have permission (means being the admin of the system!)
If you do it for all of the files iTunes should work again.

If you have any Problems finding the links I talked about, it may result from the fact that I simply tried to translate from German into English. Sould be quite similar though.

Good luck!
Cheers, Frede

Ive had the same problem for months and just found a really stupid simple fix for windows users

Find the file "iTunes Library Genius" (for me it wasn't in the system files it was in "my music")
Once you find it go into the properties and deselect "read only"
this SHOULD solve it but just to make sure I did the same to the files "iTunes Lbrary Extras" and "iTunes Library"

hope this helps
