ipod formats when syncing

hello... hope someone can help.

when i dock my ipod to sync my itunes with my ipod it automatically deletes all content. i then have to restore and then put everything back on again. i have 50gig of music on there so it takes a while and is starting to get really irritating!

anyone else have this problem?
