An employee of mine has an old ipod, with color screen and picture capability. EWhen he tries to turn it on it shows the Apple logo then displays a "sad" ipod with a warning symbol and the above message. Is this fixable?

wow, should have read more before posting. I gave it a good hard tap against my desk and it came to life.

my ipod shows the apple screen but when i click buttons for it to come on it shows a sad face and says visit apple.com/support/ipod

Yes...the hard tap worked wonders for me as well.

This is incredible... could not believe a 21st century Apple product could work with a medieval age tap. After much frustration and as a last resort I decided to heed the advice on this discussion and Lo Behold! This realy works!!!

The iPod's hard drive is repeatedly spinning up (to cache songs into memory) and spinning down (to save power). So if the hard drive is starting to become faulty due to sticktion or weak motor (not being to get the disk spinning initially), it is likely that the problem will recur and get worse over time. But it may work for a while longer by resorting to "Medieval" tactics...

I have an 20GB color ipod(photo) and it died today, it only shows an ill ipod icon and says to visit that page, i tried all apple supporters tricks but it's still dead, I really love it so if any of you can help me it would be great.

    Thanks:)

Ha! Thank goodness all of you posted your suggestion of whacking it against a hard surface. My husband and I just booked a slot for the Genius Bar where we were planning to go tomorrow, get some bad news and shell out more money for a new iPod. We found your advice and thought there is nothing lost in trying. After about 3 hard hits against our wood table my iPod came back to life. Great advice and made us laugh pretty hard. Anyone else coming up against this same problem don't go buy a new iPod. Resort to the medieval whack that you once to use on your old tv and you're back in business.

I gave my ipod about 20 smacks against the table and it didn't work

still just get the apple symbol then the white screen with www.apple/support/ipod

    Wish it worked for me!!!

It took two whacks for me! Maybe Apple should put it in the troubleshooting guide. By the way, I went through the support pages before coming here and was very discouraged that the estimated service cost for this product is $250 + $30 shipping.

There is NO WAY Apple is going to put a procedure that involves whacking an iPod (especially with a hard drive inside) against a table into any official Apple document.

That would surely be a lawsuit magnet...

I can't believe this but it works!! I'm very impressed.

Holy cow!! The medieval whack worked yet again! I was reluctant to really hit it hard, the whole electronic device w/hard drive etc, etc, but since I was looking at buying a new ipod, I figured, what the heck? So.... I gave it a really good WHACK after a few not so heartfelt ones and it worked like a charm!!
