what is the best version of itunes.

several months ago i had a computer crash. No worries, all backed up. Haven't used itunes since, just been using the ipod with what was on it, no $ for new computer. Recently received old laptop running windows XP, and just bought new nano for wife for xmas. Read all problems with itunes 8 and wondering what version is best to use overall.
