Linksys Router Won't Connect to Internet

A friend gave me a Linksys Wireless-B Router (BEFW11S4). I can't seem to get it to connect to the internet wired or otherwise. I'm running 10.4.11 and I can connect to the router and the router will assign IP addresses but it won't allow my Mac to connect to the internet. I ran the firmware upgrade but that didn't help. My internet connection works fine if I plug in the old router. I can network fine and print with the new router connected to my Mac via ethernet. I've tried swapping cables with no luck. If I ping an IP address in Terminal I get errors. I can even login to the router with my iPod Touch but again no internet connection. What do I have setup wrong?

The router? 😉

Can't answer that I'm afraid, but I'd start by re-plugging in and logging in to the old router then copying down all the settings. Then plug in the new router and log in to that and make sure the settings are the same.

How you log in I wouldn't know, but on my NetGear it's via a web interface.

Here's a quote from somewhere on the interweb about that Linksys router...

All linksys broadband routers, unless otherwise stated, connect directly to an ETHERNET broadband connection. This is standard on all Telewest and NTL broadband services, but to use with ADSL you will need a modem with an ETHERNET port.

Does this apply to you? Do you have the correct connection?

Have you read the manual for the router?

Two things which may be causing problems: firstly, go to the router setup page and make sure that is is set to 'obtain an IP number automatically'.

The second is to check with your ISP whether they require registration of the MAC address of the device connected to the modem: some do, some don't. If so you should be able to get the MAC address of the router from the setup page and register it with them.
