Bluetooth audio quality concerns

OK, I'm opening a new thread with this one, since I would really like to gather opinions of people who are also facing bluetooth audio quality issues.

Since I got my iPhone 3G, and paired it with my bluetooth headsets, people have been complaining that the couldn't hear me well. My voice would crack up, or even not make it at all to the other side. I got a couple of new bluetooth headsets, only to find out that it wasn't the headsets' fault. That said, I would like to add, that all the headsets that seem to misbehave when paired to the iPhone, work great when in use with my older SE mobile phone.

I did some testing and found out that, the issue of my side cracking up or not sounding at all would only arise when the OTHER party was in a noisy environment (usually trying to talk to somebody in a Mall would do the trick). That said, I would also like to add that when talking through the iPhone itself (even on speakerphone), would work fine!

I am suspecting that there is an echo cancelation feature build-into the iPhone that revs up when talking through a bluetooth headset and seems to cut-off my headset's input level when strong noise it detected from the other side, presumably to avoid echo. Seems like this feature is badly tuned, in a way that communication can no longer work in an syncronous way.

What seems strange to me is that, after updating to v2.2 of iPhone software, the issue seemed to have gone away; however, it looks like it's back!

This whole situation could also be connected to various bluetooth quality issues many people are facing when using bluetooth car kits. I would suggest you try and connect such issues with the NOISE on the OTHER END.

Any input would be greatly appreciated.

P.S. I will try and put together a Skype call that would hopefully demostrate what I am trying to say.

ivassilis,

The issue you are facing is irrelevant with this thread. You should search the forums a bit; I am sure you'll find several posts dealing with your issue. That said, I believe a restore should help, however, please keep your issue on a different thread, since this one focuses on bluetooth audio QUALITY issues, once your headset STAYS connected to the iPhone.

I've the same problem with all of you guys... it's very frustrating since I used to use my bluetooth headset a lot before i got this iPhone. I thought iPhone did a really bad job on the bluetooth module even Koren cell doesn't have this problem at all. Here's my phone and headset details:

Phone: iPhone 3G 16Gb White
Headset: itech clip naro 601
Problem: the other party of the phone conversation can barely hear my voice and the voice broken up too.

I, too, have had some major issues with the audio quality of BT headsets on my 3G. I have a black 3G, 16GB, purchased a little under a year ago, and this is the third one I had to go through.

Before I get to the BT issues, I'll start with the corded Apple headset, which may (or may not) be relevant. With the first two 3G phones, whenever I would plug the corded Apple headset in, the party on the other side would hear their voices echo. It would get so severe that the conversation would come to a halt.

I am now experiencing that on the current phone, but I gave up trying to figure it out. No one in the Apple stores had an explanation either. All I know is that once the corded headset is pulled out, and the phone is used normally, the echo goes away.

On to the BT issues...

With this third 3G iPhone, I have gone through EIGHT different Bluetooth headsets. I apologize, but I do not know the model numbers on the following, but it doesn't seem to really matter, as all of them had the same audio quality issues.

Three different Jawbone 2 units, two high-end Plantronics, one lower priced Plantronics, high-end Motorola, mid-range Jabra.

All of which had poor audio quality, with the person on the other end unable to hear me clearly (the most widespread issue), static interference with the phone only two feet away, and various interference throughout the calls.

The Jawbone 2, which so many have raved about, was the biggest headache, but I gave it many chances, exchanging it three different times. The Noise Assassin feature did not work at all. I saw the video demos on their website, but questioned the validity. Then, I spoke with many people who own the Jawbone 2, and they all attested to the functionality of the NA feature.

With my iPhone, sitting in my car, doors and windows closed, with the radio turned up only slightly, the person on the other end of the call could hear everything. The earpiece was sitting perfectly on my face and in my ear, no issues with it slipping or falling out.

Even with the radio turned off, and no noise to interfere with the call, there were complaints of the volume of my voice sounding too low. This is in comparison to someone I just spoke to on the street who was using a Jawbone 2. He said he could be in his car, with his beefed-up stereo system blasting, and his girlfriend on the other end heard him clearly.

Thanar, thank you for setting this thread up. If you say these issues are fixed with the 3.0 update, then I'll be a happy man!

I have also experienced all these issues from the start.
Spend many hours per day on my phone, and this issue prevents me from using my iphone! As much as I love it in every other way, I simply can not use it as a phone!! Arrrgghhhhh!

3.0 does not solve the problem. Initial testing revealed that it was better, but i still have the same issues.

I spend all my time dialing into conference calls with work colleagues.
I have to be able to speak over them at times, to be able to make a point before they move to another topic, and if any one on the line is talking, they just won't hear me.

3.0 is kind of wierd, when testing with it many callers would complain that i just wasn't clear (as well as the half duplex issue).

For the record, I have some 6 different headsets, and have tried with all of them - no change.

In this day and age for a high-end phone not to have bluetooth headset capability is unbelievable! What is more ridiculous is that they still haven't solved it!

Hello again,

I would like to confirm that this BUG is STILL HERE, however, NOT for me anymore. My brother is still suffering from it though, even after upgrading to iPhone OS 3.0! The difference between us two is that MY headset supports A2DP (it's a Jabra BT530).

I say again, I am NOT facing this issue anymore, although I am the original poster of the issue, hence a bit sensitive in such audio issues.

I will make some tests with my Jabra on my brothers iPhone to see if things change for him and will let you know.

I have some extremelly interesting information. Seems like this issue is going to puzzle all of us for a lot more time than we all hoped it would.

Using the SAME headset (Jabra BT530) on BOTH my phone and my brother's one, talking to the SAME person who's in a bar right now (noisy environment), the conversation is PROBLEMATIC using my brother's iPhone and FLAWLESS using mine!

Both iPhones are on the SAME iPhone OS 3.0 software and BOTH phones had this issue prior to the software update (that is, mine didn't work well using the SAME headset as well!).

Needless to note that my brother has not seen ANY improvement on this issue when talking using his Plantronics Voyager 815 headset (no A2DP support).

I have double-checked that, when my Jabra is in use under both phones, it DOESN'T connect through A2DP, however, it IS using A2DP when playing music on BOTH phones.

I think we're not getting anywhere with this issue, and am waiting for MY iPhone as well to return back to normal, that is not being able to talk using a bluetooth headset.

Bummer!
