Bluetooth audio quality concerns

OK, I'm opening a new thread with this one, since I would really like to gather opinions of people who are also facing bluetooth audio quality issues.

Since I got my iPhone 3G, and paired it with my bluetooth headsets, people have been complaining that the couldn't hear me well. My voice would crack up, or even not make it at all to the other side. I got a couple of new bluetooth headsets, only to find out that it wasn't the headsets' fault. That said, I would like to add, that all the headsets that seem to misbehave when paired to the iPhone, work great when in use with my older SE mobile phone.

I did some testing and found out that, the issue of my side cracking up or not sounding at all would only arise when the OTHER party was in a noisy environment (usually trying to talk to somebody in a Mall would do the trick). That said, I would also like to add that when talking through the iPhone itself (even on speakerphone), would work fine!

I am suspecting that there is an echo cancelation feature build-into the iPhone that revs up when talking through a bluetooth headset and seems to cut-off my headset's input level when strong noise it detected from the other side, presumably to avoid echo. Seems like this feature is badly tuned, in a way that communication can no longer work in an syncronous way.

What seems strange to me is that, after updating to v2.2 of iPhone software, the issue seemed to have gone away; however, it looks like it's back!

This whole situation could also be connected to various bluetooth quality issues many people are facing when using bluetooth car kits. I would suggest you try and connect such issues with the NOISE on the OTHER END.

Any input would be greatly appreciated.

P.S. I will try and put together a Skype call that would hopefully demostrate what I am trying to say.

Mainly to wareham:

I've been monitoring your experience with the SE headsets you've been trying since August. If I read among the posts correctly, you've had excellent results while using a HBH-PV770 and -most lately- a HBH-IV840. Have you had ANY issues with these headsets like the one discussed here? Or have you been completely trouble-free using the above-mentioned headsets?

Your experience is highly-needed, since you seem to be one of the few who have identified and experience the problem we're talking about and seem to have found a couple of headsets that actually work fine with the iPhone, regarding the failure of -possibly- iPhone's echo cancellation feature.

Please, wareham, post back. Thank you.

I don't have any issues with these headsets (except before reparing after 3.1 update, when the BT problem was returned). Headsets are not upgraded, original new headsets. I tested: talking at the same time, in noisy environment (on one or both sides), with people who are very well familiar with this bluetooth problem. My voice is loud and clear instead of low level, distant, fluctuating, and turned all the way down when we speak at the same time as before.

I have had the same problem with my Plantronics 925 headset ever since upgrading my 3G iphone to 3.0. - people on the other end can't hear me, even if we're both in very quiet environments. Before that, everything was fine. When I got my phone it had 2.1, which was fine, as was 2.2 and 2.2.1. Then I upgraded to 3.0 and that was it. I've tried everything I can think of but nothing seems to fix it.

I even went to the Apple store and they claim that no one has come to them with this problem before and they had no idea how to help me. I suggested they revert my operating system back to 2.2.1 and they said that can't be done. They suggested it was probably a headset problem, which I know it isn't, and conveniently had no other headsets in their store that they could try.

This is a really frustrating problem and Apple seems to be very quiet about it on the forums. It's clearly a software bug and unfortunately the latest minor upgrade didn't address the problem. I can only hope it's sorted out by 3.1, whenever that will be.

Well 3.1 is out so try it and see what your results are...

As usual my PlayStation 3 headset is better than my 925... but it still suffers from the bug after a while... Has everyone sent feedback to Apple yet?

Maybe this is the reason Apple stopped making their own BT headset, I so wished we could find a fix for this issue. Using corded headsets for work really really *****...

@Thanar
Completely random is the word - or is it a consistent failure? 😉

@All
FYI: Tried my iPhone 3G again today together with my bluetooth headset SE HBH-GV435 (first fully loaded it of course). Results;

Call 1: No problems
That I know of, they didn't say anything and I was not in a position to ask. My BT-hopes rised - maybe the OS 3.1 really finally fixed this 🙂

Call 2: Are you on a bad connection? I can bearly hear you...
Call 3: Hello?!
Call 4: I can't hear you...
Etc and as usual the BT headset worked just fine with other mobiles.

*Another day of dissapointments.*
And again I pack down my BT headsets, didn't even bother to unpack and test the 7 ( ! ) other BTs I got because of this iPhone-issue (BTW: iPhone/iPhone3G no 3). Don't know if I'll even bother to buy iPhone 3GS before this issue is resolved by Apple.

*And as usual, I'll send my bugreports ones again...*
But it makes me wonder - don't Americans use bluetooth? 😉 Since it's seems to be such a low-ranked issue at Apple? We users (and developers) just want to see this resolved quickly and get on with loving our iPhones and apps!

Couldn't agree with you more! Seems like Americans aren't as health-savvy as we Europeans are!
