can dvd-r 1.4 gb be used?

During a recent trip we used dozens of the 30-minute DVD-R 1.4 GB diskettes. Now we want to transfer the video images to a MacBook Pro but will we be able to? I have easily downloaded the correct Cannon CD (that came with the camcorder), but my Mac won't recognize the camcorder. And I don't think I should put the small diskette into the DVD slot of my Mac. Can anyone tell me if, for sure, these small DVD's can be inserted into the Mac slot for DVD's? If not, any suggestion on how I can get the videos we took downloaded into our Mac? Thanks!

Welcome to Apple Discussions:
Do not even think of putting them in a MBP. Not even with the adapter ring.
Get an external HD that accepts these DVDs without the adapter and everything will be fine.
I use a LaCie, but many external optical drives accept the 80 mm size. They have a second smaller cutout in the tray.
If you have a lot of these DVDs, the external drive is the right way to go.
Whether or not a Mac can read the format is another issue altogether.
