If I delete an email on my iPhone, will it also be deleted in gmail?

If I delete and email on my iPhone, will it also be deleted in gmail? If so, how does the iPhone handle the "archive" feature of gmail? I'm worried that it will download all of the archived emails because they aren't in the trash and then I will delete them on my iPhone to make room and I won't have access to those emails anymore.

Can someone explain what happens to the emails to me?
